In this role, I assisted a practicing attorney with various tasks, many involving trial preparation. I performed legal research and assisted with drafting pretrial motions, prepared images and videos for use as trial exhibits, accompanied the attorney to meetings with clients at the D.C. Central Detention Facility, and listened to calls recorded on inmate telephone system and took notes thereon as part of trial preparation.

Congressman Johnson is the lead Democratic member for the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet. My duties included researching pending legislation, responding to constituent mail and/or phone calls, navigating government agencies, and assisting with tours of the nation’s landmarks. I also assisted with assignments relevant to the Congressman’s position on the House Oversight, Transportation & Infrastructure and Judiciary Committees, as well as his responsibilities as Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Proofread text and correct spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. I verify factual correctness of information, such as dates and statistics, and edit for clarity. I also check text for style, readability and adherence to both the Associated Press and the Flat Hat style guide.

I was responsible for documenting DC Superior Court criminal proceedings: homicide, domestic violence and sex abuse cases. I observed hearings ranging from defendants' initial presentments and preliminary hearings to their eventual sentencings. My responsibilities also included writing articles published on the DC Witness website chronicling the hearing or hearings I observed each day.

As an auxiliary program assistant, I supervised middle and upper school students (grades 6-12) during special events and classes. This role was intended to help teachers who were teaching from home manage their students who were present in the school building during the pandemic. I also monitored health and safety compliance among students.
