As a performing member of the quartet So Percussion, Lawson toured nationally and internationally, performing at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Walker Arts Center, Miller Theater, the Wexner Center for the Arts, and many more, including performing a concerto at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra. He and So performed with guest artists such as Zakir Hussain and Dave Douglas. While a member of So, Lawson acted as a music / software programmer for the group, handling the programming for all recordings and live performances, including working with composer Steve Reich on the live performance of Sextet and Four Organs. Teaching was a major part of his experience with So Percussion. Master classes were taught at schools such as Juilliard, Yale, Princeton, Peabody, Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, UT Austin, Belmont University, NYU, as well as many others.

Lawson was an original member of the visionary chamber ensemble Alarm Will Sound, which formed at the Eastman School of Music while he was attending the school as an undergraduate. As a drummer and percussionist, he appears on the following Alarm Will Sound albums: Tehillim / The Desert Music (Cantaloupe Music, 2002), Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin (Cantaloupe Music, 2005), and Reich At The Roxy (Sweetspot, 2006). As a producer, Lawson produced AWS’s Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin (Cantaloupe Music, 2005) and the AWS performances on Caleb Burhans’ album Evensong (Cantaloupe Music, 2013), which he produced in full. Lawson worked did the programming for the modernization and live, interactive performance of AWS's version of Benedict Mason's "Animals and the Origins of the Dance," moving the sequences from out-dated hardware sequencers and Yamaha DX7's to a software, specifically to a modern DAW and soft synths, ensuring confident performances for AWS and for the composer for years to come.
