In 2020 he was the full-time engineer for producer Mike Elizondo but has returned to working on his own productions on a full-time basis. Lawson was mentored in NYC by engineer Charles Harbutt and producer Grace Row, both of whom were staff at Sony Music Studios. Lawson got into production by producing his own music, and then began producing records for groups of which he was a performing member. When his production schedule became too demanding to continue in these groups as a performer, Lawson left the groups and became a producer and engineer full-time. At that point he began working at Sony Music Studios, NYC mastering and archiving recordings for the Metropolitan Opera until the studio closed in 2007.

Lawson has worked as a Sound Designer and Front of House mixer in venues such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Park Avenue Armory, The Beacon Theater, Miller Theater, Merkin Hall, The Walker Art Center, Kennedy Center, and many others. He is comfortable with any size theater, and working in stereo or surround environments. Lawson has created original sound design for So Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, Big Farm (Steve Mackey & Rinde Eckert), Sarah Kirkland Snider, William Brittelle and others. Working with lighting designer Aaron Copp, choreographer Emily Johnson, and directors Rinde Eckert and Ain Gordon, Lawson created the sound design and was the Sound Designer, FOH and monitor mixer for So Percussion’s "Where We Live" and "Imaginary Cities" projects, which were commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music and toured throughout the US.

Lawson has a MM in Percussion Performance from Yale University and a BM in Percussion Performance & Literature from the Eastman School of Music. As a drummer and percussionist, Lawson is confident and comfortable in every genre, both on stage and in the studio. He is a very confident reader, sightreader, and improviser on all percussion instruments. He is competent on any keyboard instrument, guitar, bass, and pedal steel guitar. As a chamber musician, Lawson has been a member of both So Percussion and Alarm Will Sound. With So Percussion he performed a concerto at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra, and with guest artists such as Zakir Hussain and Dave Douglas. He as performed regularly as an orchestral musician with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra. As a recording and touring musician, Lawson has performed with artists such as Grand Ole Opry star Connie Smith, Shugo Tokumaru, and others. He is an active freelancer in NYC, and regularly performs as a multi-instrumentalist on the records he produces, as well as on stage.

Lawson has owned and operated a recording studio since 2007, when he purchased a full studio from Sony Music Studios, NYC, for whom he was working on a project-basis at the time. The studio was first commissioned in Studio C at Clinton Recording in NYC, where it remained until Clinton closed in 2010. The studio moved to Brooklyn in 2011, where it remained a successful business until Lawson moved it and himself to Nashville in 2019.

Lawson was Mike Elizondo's full-time engineer and studio manager from January to September 2020, working with artists like twenty one pilots, Shania Twain, Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Band Perry, Lake Street Dive, Brittany Howard, Turnstile and Rag'n'Bone Man. Working full-time left Lawson no time to maintain his own productions, so in September 2021 he returned to a full-time focus on his own projects as a producer / engineer / co-writer.

As a performing member of the quartet So Percussion, Lawson toured nationally and internationally, performing at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Walker Arts Center, Miller Theater, the Wexner Center for the Arts, and many more, including performing a concerto at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra. He and So performed with guest artists such as Zakir Hussain and Dave Douglas. While a member of So, Lawson acted as a music / software programmer for the group, handling the programming for all recordings and live performances, including working with composer Steve Reich on the live performance of Sextet and Four Organs. Teaching was a major part of his experience with So Percussion. Master classes were taught at schools such as Juilliard, Yale, Princeton, Peabody, Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, UT Austin, Belmont University, NYU, as well as many others.

Lawson was an original member of the visionary chamber ensemble Alarm Will Sound, which formed at the Eastman School of Music while he was attending the school as an undergraduate. As a drummer and percussionist, he appears on the following Alarm Will Sound albums: Tehillim / The Desert Music (Cantaloupe Music, 2002), Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin (Cantaloupe Music, 2005), and Reich At The Roxy (Sweetspot, 2006). As a producer, Lawson produced AWS’s Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin (Cantaloupe Music, 2005) and the AWS performances on Caleb Burhans’ album Evensong (Cantaloupe Music, 2013), which he produced in full. Lawson worked did the programming for the modernization and live, interactive performance of AWS's version of Benedict Mason's "Animals and the Origins of the Dance," moving the sequences from out-dated hardware sequencers and Yamaha DX7's to a software, specifically to a modern DAW and soft synths, ensuring confident performances for AWS and for the composer for years to come.
