The Ella Baker Center organizes to shift resources away from prisons and punishment towards opportunities that make our communities safe, healthy, and strong. Named after civil rights hero Ella Baker, we mobilize Black, Brown, and low-income people to build power and prosperity in our communities.Responsibilities: • Conduct thorough triage of 100+ letters weekly from state and federal prisons, categorizing based on medical conditions, legal concerns, and legislative information. • Maintain an organized system for efficient letter tracking and response management, enhancing operational efficiency. • Collaborate with a team of 10 to ensure timely handling of incoming correspondences, demonstrating strong teamwork and communication skills. • Research and compile relevant information to address complex legal and medical issues raised in the letters. • Assist in drafting responses and coordinating with appropriate resources to provide comprehensive support to incarcerated individuals. • Attend California Senate meetings to monitor and report on legislative developments, providing critical updates to the advocacy team. • Conduct comprehensive research on pending and enacted legislation to inform policy recommendations and advocacy strategies. • Write and contribute to policy briefs, position papers, and other documents to support legislative and advocacy efforts.
