Third Culture Therapy

Third Culture Therapy is a series that explores the unique ways our mental health and emotional wellbeing are impacted by our social identities and backgrounds. Through interviews with people from minority, second-generation, immigrant or ‘third culture’ communities, I delve into the variety of historical, religious, cultural and political baggage we carry with us and how they can help or hinder our sense of self and interaction with the world around us.

Feb 2023 - Present

Senior Correspondent

London, England, United Kingdom

Writer and presenter for one of the leading English-language news outlets from the Middle East with a special interest in social issues affecting Arab and Muslim communities in the UK and Europe, particularly in relation to the arts, culture, asylum, immigration, and mental health. My most prolific coverage centred on the ‘Warm Welcome’ of Afghan refugees in the UK. I wrote extensively about dozens of refugees I met who were brought here during Operation Pitting, highlighting the challenges they’ve faced living in hotels for over a year, their mental health struggles and their difficulties settling into new lives in the UK amid continued uncertainty. I travelled to Calais and Dunkirk, visiting several ‘roving’ impermanent camps where migrants pitch temporary tents before attempting to cross into the UK. I also met with several NGOs and humanitarian workers on the ground to learn more about the challenges they faced aiding refugees in an increasingly hostile socio-political environment. My coverage on asylum issues also spotlighted the lesser spoken plight of migrants who were caught in a political tug-of-war, finding themselves trapped between the wooded borders of Belarus and Poland which led many to disappear or die in the forest amid continued pushbacks from both sides. I regularly contributed to The National’s flagship Arab Showcase section which spotlights prominent and successful Arabs around the world through in-depth and intimate profile pieces. In 2021, I travelled to Cyprus and reported on the developments of the island’s ‘frozen conflict’ and attempts at reunification with a visit to Varosha, an uninhabited town under Turkish occupation for nearly half a century that was recently reopened. I also looked at the exodus of Lebanese people to the European island amid Lebanon’s economic collapse as well as on the developments
