Orise Research Fellow
Washington, District Of Columbia, United States
As an ORISE Research Fellow hosted by the EPA Office of Water Partnership Programs Branch, I strive to enhance the efforts of the Trash-Free Waters Program. The TFW Program is a voluntary, place-based program that works in partnership with other federal, state, and private stakeholders to reduce and prevent trash from entering U.S. waters and the ocean. As a Trash-Free Waters team member, I track and monitor regional workplans and identify ways to catalyze further partnerships between Headquarters, Regional offices, state and local governments, NGOs, community groups, and businesses. This work requires constant coordination with regional offices and contractors and advanced technical writing skills to ensure successful project management. Outside of my regional desk officer duties, I also help advance the cause of TFW through various outreach coordination efforts. This element of the position calls for creative thinking and follow-through to both propose campaign ideas and carry them out in communities across the nation. Outreach thus far has included thorough research and overall coordination of a national marketing competition to promote the TFW message and a curbside disposal education campaign to promote proper waste management techniques. Because EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler has classified marine litter as a critical priority for the Agency, this position also demands the ability to translate project successes into succinct talking points for senior leadership including the Administrator. I also work to integrate the Partnership Programs Branch’s projects to encourage a collaborative, watershed-scale approach to strategic water resource planning. In this role, I provide system analyses and use a holistic perspective to coordinate with a large coalition of external partners to address issues and remove barriers limiting place-based water protection outcomes.
