I build experimental games and playful toys, open-source tools, and developer communities. I have particularly deep experience working with and designing for emerging technologies and non-traditional user interfaces. Whether I am creating my own installation art games, doing R&D or early-stage product prototyping as a designer-engineer, or producing educational content for developers and designers, I strive to make complex systems comprehensible and approachable through playful design.I'm currently based in Toronto. Previously, I was based in Berlin, where I was co-founder of a funded games hardware startup and did contract work on projects such as When In Rome, a tabletop game for smart speakers that was nominated for the 2019 Toy Fair Game of the Year award.I've been fortunate enough to spend time in creative learning and research spaces such as the Recurse Center and the MIT Media Lab, where my research within the Playful Systems research group focused on storytelling at the intersection of experiential theatre, interactive fiction, and audio-based augmented reality. I've also worked on great products and with great teams such as Words With Friends, Timehop, Etsy, and Pivotal Labs.As an event organizer, I help run Roguelike Celebration, an annual conference about games and procedural generation, and alt.ctrl.PARTY, an annual celebration of physical hardware games during the Game Developers Conference, as well as a number of regional meetups. During the pandemic, I've been experimenting heavily with building custom game-like social spaces to make virtual events more social.
