Using light as the workhorse for refrigeration has the key benefits of being fluid-free, vibration-less, and compact since lasers make no physical contact with the sample and have no moving parts. In addition to the fundamental scientific interest in studying light-matter interactions, this work has important applications in the thermal management of laser systems at room temperature and cryogenic optical coolers, especially for space-based technologies. Developed new experimental approaches that overcome impurity heating and speed up cooling by saturation of background absorption and the use of allowed transitions. Demonstrated cooling in novel materials and on an electric-dipole-allowed transition for the first time. Achieved a record maximum cooling of 10 K in air at room temperature. Investigated the role of quantum effects on solid-state laser cooling. -

Worked with frequency-stabilized diode lasers, AOMs, RF analog electronics, and saturated absorption spectroscopy. -

Created LabVIEW software routines to interface with instrumentation and analyze data. Presented the results of my research at the end-of-summer student colloquium. -
