About Laura Hogan
My goal is to understand the direction & purpose of a company and then create the structure, team & process to achieve it. Sun Tzu said, “in the midst of chaos there is also opportunity.” Throughout my career I have been brought in to do just that – to create order & opportunity out of chaos. I’m known among my colleagues as the person to go to when you need something done. I have built or completely overhauled major corporate functions making them more efficient & effective towards accomplishing the mission of the organization. My career path has taken some interesting turns – beginning with jobs as a challenge tester & body double on Survivor & a waitress in an Australian football stadium to a complete restructuring of a global non-profit to now a media company with the purpose of creating a more informed public. “Co-workers” along my path included sharks for Shark Week, adorable puppies, kittens & a menagerie of other animals for Puppy Bowl, wildlife ecologists studying elk in Yellowstone, educators using immersive learning & geo-inquiry in their classrooms, camera trap experts making extraordinary photos of animals in their natural habitats & marine ecologists documenting the diverse ocean waters in an effort to preserve them. I now stand beside some of the most remarkable journalists in the country, telling stories that reflect, serve and inspire all Americans. The thread running through all of this is my passion for adventure & excitement – whether in the boardroom or in the mountains of Peru, my ability to take an idea & turn it into a reality & my deep desire to support the passion & creativity of those around me. While most of my international adventure and excitement was lived in the early part of my career, I now currently enjoy supporting the goal-oriented aspirations of others. How best should we make this planet livable for all? What crazy ideas will become the norm of tomorrow? What young minds will carry humans to a sustainable planet for all creatures to enjoy? How do we best share all of these ideas and stories? To find the answers to all of these questions will require system & process people like myself, constantly thinking outside the box, to support those endeavoring to answer them.

Chief Of Staff To The Svp, Programming & Audience Development
Principal, Senior Consultant
Previous work includes: NPR - supporting the SVP of Programming & Audience Development in strategic and operational objectives including improving processes around team communications. Pathfinder International - project managing their efforts to define a ‘Northstar’ or organizational direction for the coming five years. National Geographic Society - multiple projects including design and implementation of the Explorer Symposium as part of Explorer Festival 2018. Over two days we had over 80 explorers on stage sharing their work and inspiring an audience of over 1500.
Chief Enterprise Operations Officer
After a period of huge transition for the Society, the CEO created a new position for me to help stabilize the organization after this transitional phase. I tackled company wide challenges of internal communication and setting of key performance indicators (KPI).
Deputy Chief Program Officer, Svp Program Operations
In fall 2015 the National Geographic Society and 21st Century Fox created the joint media venture National Geographic Partners for all of National Geographic's public facing media entities. I was recruited by the Society to advance the strategic direction of the new exclusively nonprofit entity. I was part of the senior team that established the new mission and growth objectives in support of grant making, operational programs and explorer growth towards the advancement of science, exploration, education and storytelling. I implemented the complete restructuring of the 175+ employee Programs division and established zero based budgeting for our annual $79M budget. One of my proudest achievements was bringing together and facilitating a team that went on to merge 16 different grant programs into one centralized program - improving operational efficiency and streamlining, and making clear, the process for grant recipients and application reviewers.
Vice President, Operations & Strategy
Recruited by former colleagues at Discovery, I was brought in to bring order to a production unit newly created out of a group of departments that had previously been spread across the company. This new unit, National Geographic Studios, was tasked with creating all forms of video content required for National Geographic from IMAX to iPhone. Previously these six different units, with over 200 employees total, all used different processes for tracking projects, managing media, budgeting and staffing. In under a year my team brought them all together under a unified set of systems and procedures, increasing efficiency and allowing for more effective growth and collaboration.
