Technische Universiteit Eindhoven Dec 2019 - Sep 2024
    Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Nederland
    - Assistant Professor at the Building Performance group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. In this role I supervise PhD's, PDEngs, postdocs and MSc. (graduation) students. In addition, I've been a lecturer for a number of courses. My research interests are mainly focused on the sustainble renovation of the building stock, wit special interest in heritage buildings, life cycle assessment to assess environmental impact, circularity, and energy system integration (neighborhood/city level). - In recent years, I contributed to the development of the National Climate Agreement by developing ‘the Renovation Accelerator’, a subsidy program that was recently launched, aiming to accelerate the large-scale renovation of the housing stock. In this context I've been a frequent advisor and managed projects for both de Bouwagenda and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. - Guest-editor for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews and author of publications forjournals such as Building and Environment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Energy andBuildings and Journal of Cultural Heritage. - Chief editor (together with Emanuele Naboni) of the book publication ‘Regenerative Design in Digital Practice’ (2019). - Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings 2021, the SBE Conference Crossing Boundaries 2021 and the SBE Conference Sustainable Built Heritage 2021.- PhD (2019) on the sustainable renovation of post-war housing. Eindhoven
Principal Scientist System Integration of the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems, and as part of this role part of the management team of the institute. Together with professor Guus Pemen, I'm leading the focus area 'Energy System Integration' as part of the newly founded institute. In this context, I'm setting up collaborations with district operators, municipalities, housing corporations and developers of innovative technologies (e.g. for storage, distribution and production of energy). We are currently forming our first consortium EIRES consortium. In the coming months, Guus and I will be in charge of setting up the focus area, and developing the program lines and the network of researchers and companies that will contribute to the focus area.

Common Futures. Energy Transition Specialists Sep 2024 - Present
    Utrecht, Utrecht, Nederland

  • Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
    Project Manager
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven May 2018 - Dec 2019
    Eindhoven, Nederland
As part of the Climate Agreement of the Netherlands, TU Eindhoven is actively involved in a number of projects aiming to accelerate the large-scale sustainable renovation of the housing stock. As part of this involvement we've developed a project proposal in which the university would be responsible for:1. Developing a housing classification system for the collective procurement of renovations, providing the standardisation of demand that is essential for industrialisation and innovation. (as part of 'De Renovatieversneller')2. Developing a decision support system for identifying optimal renovation strategies, both for collective procurements by housing corporations, as well as more tailored solutions for private home owners. (as part of the development of a governmental digital platform for housing renovation)3. Incorporating the evaluation of innovative products in the decision-support system to be able to predict the potential impact of certain innovations on future renovation strategies. As the project manager, I am and have been responsible for the development and definition of the project, for the contact with stakeholders and for the integration of a multitude of domains and research chairs in the overall project.

The Western Garden Cities (WGC) of Amsterdam are a famous example of post-war housing in the Netherlands, and have been selected by the National Heritage Agency as one of the post-war neighbourhoods that is of national importance and should remain recognisable in the urban landscape. The WGC face the same problems as other post-war housing estates; a state of overdue maintenance of the building stock (high energy use) and the public spaces have led to plans for large scale demolition and new construction. However, as the heritage significance of post-war neighbourhoods is more and more being recognised, this provides the opportunity to explore the possibilities of sustainable transformation of post-war heritage. The PhD is embedded in both the chair of Building Physics as well as the chair of Architectural History & Theory. The aim is to integrate heritage significance (Heritage Impact Assessment), environmental impact (Life Cycle Assessment), indoor air quality (Hygrothermal Performance Assessment) and costs (Life Cycle Costing) in the evaluation of design decisions on the sustainable refurbishment of post-war heritage. The first of these, Heritage Impact Assessment, is still very underdeveloped. Mostly, they are not conducted, and when they are, they are often not specific or detailed enough to inform refurbishment design decisions. The aim of the research is therefore twofold: Firstly, to develop a methodology for determining, analysing and representing the heritage significance embodied in attributes (Heritage Significance Assessment). This method was applied to 10 post-war ensembles. This way, the research aims to contribute to the understanding of the heritage significance of post-war heritage and how to preserve it. Secondly, to integrate Heritage Impact Assessment, Life Cycle Assessment, Hygrothermal Performance Assessment and Life Cycle Costing in the evaluation of design decisions on the sustainable refurbishment of two post-war ensembles.

  • Compen Architecten
    Junior Architect
    Compen Architecten Mar 2008 - Jan 2014
    Eindhoven En Omgeving, Nederland
