Working for a respiratory drug development company with a specific focus on severe viral infections in asthma and COPD. This role was primarily laboratory based, providing key experience in both molecular and cell culture techniques. Initial roles included attending bronchoscopies to collect bronchial epithelial cells, maintenance of cell lines and primary cells and end point analysis of trial samples - RNA extraction, nanodrop, RT-qPCR, PBMCs, blood serum, sputum and PAX gene.Roles later progressed; responsibilities were extended to allow for initiation and management of experimental design and application. Projects involved primary cell culture infection with RSV and Rhinovirus and optimisation of the laboratories qPCR methodologies, including usage of Qbase and CFX software. Experimental work comprised of working within a virus lab, conducting TCID50s, plaque assays, cytotoxicity assays and basic flow cytometry. Throughout the projects, detailed reports were kept with data analysed in Excel, Prism, Qbase and CFX software. Regular updates and technical reports were also presented both orally and visually at company meetings.
