I was sweating profusely, the chants of the Paiute elders reverberating through the small hut where I sat cross-legged breathing in the hot steam as cold water poured onto hot lava rocks. I was in Elco, Nevada on a journey to walk across the country to advocate for passage of the federal DREAM Act, legislation that would have brought educational opportunity for millions of undocumented youth living in the US.Ever since I was a young boy, I always knew I was meant for great things. My passion for building relationships and my strong work ethic have constantly driven me towards new challenges, new skill sets, and new heights. As one of the 11 founding members, I helped develop and implement the infrastructure to take the organization from vision to national reality. I walked from San Francisco to Nevada, about 600 miles. This project has helped strengthen and develop my leadership and organizing abilities.• I walked 600 miles to advocate for passage of the federal Dream Act and engaged with over 3,000 people across the country through panels and forums. I was a speaker at high schools, universities, churches, indigenous tribal communities, etc.• Lobbied over 50 state officials for support of statewide Dream Act initiatives. I met with elected representatives in state legislatures in California, Nevada, and Utah from both political parties to discuss the need for educational opportunity for undocumented students in their states. This included several hours with Gilbert Cedillo, who was the architect of the California Dream Act.• Produced over 20 press releases and advisories and developed over 25 relationships with media outlets and reporters. I was the media liaison in the field and handled all the media relationships and pitches necessary to raise awareness of the project.• Created, coordinated and maintained all social media accounts for the organization, increasing organizational reach to tens of thousands of people nationwide. Utilized social media tools such as Tweetdeck and Hootsuite to form a social media strategy to increase online activity and constituency. Worked with a team to deliver scheduled blogs and CAD news to subscribers across the country.• Assisted in the development of organizational structure and capacity building by defining internal and external processes.
