Dr. L. ​ DeWayne Cecil founded Destination SPACE in March​ 2017 with a vision of providing students with space related interactive science education. As the Director of Destination SPACE, Dr. Cecil draws upon his extensive background in applied earth sciences and remote sensing. After earning a PhD. in Earth Science from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Cecil went on to serve as Chief Scientist of the Applied Sciences Program at NASA Headquarters and as Senior Science Advisor at NASA Langley's Systems Engineering Office, Lead Applications Scientist at the USGS 's Global Change Research Program, ​and the first Western Region ​Climate Services Director at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information​ (NCEI)​.In addition to his work in climate research, aerospace applications, ​and management, Dr. Cecil has worked extensively around the world​. His travels have taken him to Japan, Nepal, China, Argentina​, Brazil, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, ​Russia, ​and beyond. He has climbed the Tien Shan and ​Himalayan mountains, traversed glaciers, and searched the world's oceans​. Dr. Cecil's breadth and depth of experience in research and in applied sciences has inspired him to pass on his expertise and enthusiasm to the next generation of scientists, engineers, and data managers through Destination SPACE's STEM programs and projects.

Sustainable earth Observation Systems (SeOS) was formed in September 2015 and is an Aerospace Applications and Climate Services Consulting firm based in North Carolina, USA. Dr. L. DeWayne Cecil is the Founder and Chief Scientist for SeOS. He has 40 years of experience in conducting applied environmental research for decision support and societal benefit. His career has been focused on taking research beyond the goal of understanding how the earth system works to focusing on how an improved understanding of earth science processes can benefit society and economies. SeOS was formed in response from multiple requests for advice and recommendations for helping NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) in commercializing space research and applications from the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory (the US portion of the ISS). He has worked with staff at CASIS in their Good Earth Campaign exploring new and innovative ways of reaching out primarily to the private sector (as well as the academic and government sectors) to generate interest in conducting experiments on the International Space Station that will provide research results that have application beyond the science and engineering communities. In addition to work with CASIS and NASA, SeOS is assisting NOAA, USGS, and other domestic and international aerospace and climate services firms in developing science applications around the globe.
