About Laura Didyk
1976. Carmel, CA. I'm sitting cross-legged on the floor of the Thunderbird Bookshop with a horde of other kids, gazing up at author Beverly Cleary. I'm six. Beverly Cleary is sixty. Perched on a small yellow chair in her purple pants suit, she reads to us, talks about Beezus, Ramona, and Henry as if they are her friends, our friends, which they are. She waxes on about story and the imagination. With my elbows on my knees, chin resting in my hands, I know two things: I love her, and I want to be like her. EDITORIAL PROFESSIONALTwo decades later, still writing, I receive my BA in creative writing, and begin my education in publishing, as assistant editor of the college's literary magazine. While earning my MFA in poetry, I'll serve as managing editor on another respected literary publication, then editor-in-chief.Since then, I have accumulated more than 20 years of editing, copyediting, and production-management experience in magazine and book publishing, as well as years as a copywriter for various organizations. This experience includes• Editing and copyediting everything from novels and poetry by first-time writers to graphic memoirs, children's books, and nonfiction books on art, architecture, nature, and business by award-winning authors for renowned publishers• Sitting at the helm of two widely circulated magazines while serving in production, editing, and managerial roles • Partnering with a range of private clients as a freelance editor, copyeditor, and copywriterWRITER | TEACHER While I have yet to author a children’s book, my little-kid intuition that visited me that day in 1976 was spot on. I have had numerous poems, stories, and essays published in national publications, such as the Sun, Fence, Hayden's Ferry, and New Orleans Review; received fellowships at prestigious artist residencies, such as Yaddo and MacDowell; and have two books in progress. As a dynamic teacher of creative writing and mixed-media art, both on Zoom and in person, I have• Developed a flare for leading groups, classes, and meetings• Become a highly proficient communicator in all areas of my life• Honed my skills in helping new writers and makers shake off decades of conditioning to access and trust what happens when the intellect and the imagination join forcesAll the work I mention above is not all I do, but it's at the center. And I do it so I can keep going, with my own creative work, help others do their work, and ensure other artists' projects reach their highest potential (so I can reach mine). I suspect Beverly Cleary would be proud.
