As a math tutor, a majority of students tell me that “math is useless” and that “we won’t use math in real life”. I admit that on a micro level, the most math you will use on a daily basis is basic arithmetic and simple algebra. Nevertheless, my students are always fascinated to learn about the applications of statistics towards finding trends and solving critical problems within various industries. My passion for data started when I participated in a data science competition called DataFest at Chapman University. This was my first time working with such large and complex datasets from real corporations. From this experience, I learned how to develop questions and coordinate with my teammates to complete data wrangling and integrations, discover data insights, and create visualizations within a two day time frame. I got out of my comfort zone and presented our team findings in front of a panel of judges, industry professionals, and other well qualified teams. It was an extraordinary learning experience and is one of my greatest accomplishments. I am honored to have won Best Use of External Data in 2018. I joined DataFest again in 2019 and won Best Use of Statistical Tools. I always enjoyed sharing my knowledge and helping others grow so I pursued a career in education. However, my passion reignited as I took on a side project involving analysis of student data. I hope to enhance my Python coding skills and utilize my experience in education and statistics to develop and present data solutions as a Data Analyst.
