Associate Director
Museum Associate
My work giving tours as a Museum Associate at the Williams College Museum of Art has furthered my knowledge and experience in relating the significance of art to audiences. Educational outreach is an important part of the institution’s mission. I now have some experience guiding visitors, providing them a clear, informative and interesting narrative about specific works or the exhibit as a whole. I have learned that not all visitors are alike; tours must be tailored to particular audiences. I have given tours to very young children, high school and college students, and local residents.
Student
Student
In challenging courses at Williams ranging from Art in the Age of Revolution to Masterpieces of Renaissance Art, and from Methods of Art History to Historical Photography in Africa, I have learned about classic and contemporary art forms, including the historic masterpieces and emerging masterworks. I have studied art theory, forms, methods, representations, audiences, settings, as well as the historical and market contexts within which art gets produced, supported, distributed, and consumed. I have a strong interest in art at the intersections of culture, history and politics, particularly as these ideas relate to the Middle East. I have taken several art history and history courses as a Williams undergraduate that have expanded my knowledge in those areas. The art history course I took titled Image-making focused on forms of Islamic art and grounded me in the theory of Orientalism as it relates to the Western artistic gaze on Middle Eastern subjects. I am expanding my paper for this class into my senior honors thesis titled Orientalism Revisited: Ideas and Representations of the Egyptian Revolution in Cross-Cultural Political Cartoons, a study with the potential to demonstrate the complexities of representation as well as the transformative power of images as these relate to the events of the Arab Spring. I have also taken two history courses on the Middle East (Movers and Shakers in the Middle East and The Modern Middle East) from which I gained deeper knowledge of the history and context of the region. In addition, the art history course Historical Photography of Africa has provided me an important perspective on the production of politically charged images.
Concert Director And Cabin Counselor
My experience in wilderness activities has helped me develop certain interpersonal and organizational skills. As a backcountry hiker, camper and trip leader for adolescents and young adults, I have had to develop skills related to managing a group, thinking quickly under stressful conditions, making responsible, independent decisions, communicating clearly, and remaining calm under fire.
Intern
As a summer intern at the Museum at Eldridge Street in New York City, I received my first practical experience in collection management, in curating art and artifacts, and in communicating to various in-person and online audiences about the history and significance of the collection. I worked with the Museum’s archivist to develop a new web exhibit featuring the Museum’s collections. My duties included searching through and exploring the artifacts in storage, deciding which artifacts were the most significant, researching the history of the chosen artifacts, and writing up interesting descriptions of these artifacts to be posted on the website. I developed new insights into key aspects of working with a museum’s collection such as artwork preservation, historical research, and developing object descriptions.
