About Leah Martinez

As a Regional Strategy Analyst and current Presidential Management Fellow (PMF), class of 2022, I am committed to the advancement of national security interests and goals through service, both domestic and abroad. During my fellowship, I have had the privilege to apply my diverse background, which includes counterterrorism, analytics, cognitive neuroscience, and international affairs, to agencies under both the Department of Justice and the Department of Defense. My professional experience is highly interdisciplinary, including innovating novel approaches to treating PTSD through pharmacology research, managing a multi-million-dollar program designed to advance equity in higher education, and contributing to the implementation of PPD-30 keeping U.S. personnel safe abroad.When not engaged in the office or traveling abroad, I can often be found scaling a rock face or running along the Potomac in preparation for an upcoming race.Following the completion of my fellowship, I am seeking opportunities in the fields of counterterrorism, defense strategy, and international affairs.

    During my voyage as an undergraduate student researcher, both aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer and ashore with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), I coordinated with subject matter experts and policy makers in the U.S. and Bermuda to articulate the evolving need for informed oceanographic protections. In support of this need, my team and I devised a survey to capture the insights of key leaders across multiple connected disciplines, whose findings were used to exemplify the demand for ocean literacy in educational and policy deliberations.Additionally, I sailed with a small crew across the Atlantic, collecting samples for genetic barcoding and genomic analysis, while navigating and managing shipboard activities as a junior watch officer.

    While completing my degree as a full-time student, I collaborated on long-term research projects in asymmetric organic synthesis, homelessness and recidivism reduction, and evaluating the success of the University Honors Program following the implementation of holistic admissions practices. Research findings for all projects worked were presented across local, regional, and national conferences. The achievement I am most proud of however, is that research involving the interviews with over 100 currently incarcerated persons on their lived experiences successfully contributed to policy change within the Eau Claire County prison system to now include neurocognitive evaluations and the hiring of additional psychotherapy professionals.
