The Business and Administrative Law Division of the Office of the General Counsel provides legal services to Department officials concerning business management and administrative activities throughout the Department, including contracts, grants, procurement, employment, labor relations, appropriations, budget, advisory committees, copyrights, trademarks, delegations of authority, information law, and Departmental management. The Division helps the Department carry out the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act, the Privacy Act, the Federal Advisory Committee Act, the Government in the Sunshine Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the Equal Employment Opportunities Act, the Department of Education Organization Act, the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, the Federal Tort Claims Act, and the Federal Acquisition Regulations. The Division also provides advice and representation regarding organizational matters involving the Department and claims by and against the Department.

Conducted research and edited materials to prepare a book on Colorado construction law for publication.

Conducted legal research and drafted motions in practice areas such as education law and business law.

Researched legal issues such as what can constitute valid consideration and preserving an issue for summary judgment, wrote cert memos, and attended oral arguments before the Colorado Supreme Court.

Took client statements and located and interviewed witnesses; obtained police reports and evidence from local law enforcement agencies; photographed crime scenes and transcribed law enforcement radio reports; accompanied staff investigator to visit clients in jail and observed interviews.
