My research uses cutting edge biotechnology and an interdisciplinary approach to understand the mechanical regulation of mitral valve interstitial cells and how this relates to pathogenesis. I develop and apply innovative in vitro cell culture systems and biomolecular processes to develop biologically based regenerative strategies to diagnose and prevent valve disease.

I developed and enacted an innovative, student-led political-scientific outreach program, Take a Politician To Work Day, which brings elected representatives and senior government officials to campuses to visit labs that are studying topics aligned with their policy interests, led by graduate student and post doctoral researchers. Working under Dr. Richard Clark and Dr. Miriam Rafailovich, I characterized the anisotropy of healing dermal tissue in burn wounds at a near cellular level using Atomic Force Microscopy and microrheometry. Understanding the mechanical patterning that underlies wound healing establishes a regenerative platform that can be exploited to enhance and expedite burn and blast wound recovery.
