My research uses cutting edge biotechnology and an interdisciplinary approach to understand the mechanical regulation of mitral valve interstitial cells and how this relates to pathogenesis. I develop and apply innovative in vitro cell culture systems and biomolecular processes to develop biologically based regenerative strategies to diagnose and prevent valve disease.

I developed and enacted an innovative, student-led political-scientific outreach program, Take a Politician To Work Day, which brings elected representatives and senior government officials to campuses to visit labs that are studying topics aligned with their policy interests, led by graduate student and post doctoral researchers. This program has brought in local to federal representatives to a dozen campuses nationally with each visit tailored to the interests of the visitor. This program has engaged me directly with politicians and their staff, the graduate student body, and the broad scientific community at various campuses through correspondence with multiple offices, departments, laboratories, and individuals to coordinate this programming from parking arrangements, to lab tours and activities, media coverage, and discussion moderation. Under Instructor Tim Clark Hufaker and as a member of a comprehensive educational team, I ran two class sections of Cell and Developmental Biology. I created lesson plans to follow and improve the class syllabus, answered questions on material, graded homework and tests, held instructor hours, and overall supervised student learning for 40 undergraduates at the introductory level in an intensive recitation and lab session.

Working under Dr. Richard Clark and Dr. Miriam Rafailovich, I characterized the anisotropy of healing dermal tissue in burn wounds at a near cellular level using Atomic Force Microscopy and microrheometry. Understanding the mechanical patterning that underlies wound healing establishes a regenerative platform that can be exploited to enhance and expedite burn and blast wound recovery.
