I am working to accelerate science and make it more robust and reproducible through software and data engineering.I previously worked on an API to a cloud lab, bringing access to hundreds of instruments into the hands of scientists across the country using code. I was an original member of a new cross-functional team to build and expand features in my company's core software product in collaboration with existing and new customers. Before transitioning to software, I earned my PhD at Caltech with a highly interdisciplinary dissertation, spanning from synthetic biology to apparatus development. My work was part of a multi-year collaboration between five labs to develop bacteria-based engineered living materials. Additionally, I mentored an undergraduate, a master’s student, a visiting artist, and a nontraditional community college student in developing a scientific mindset as well as writing and presentation skills.Let’s connect! Scientific Software Developer - Remote Laboratory ExperimentationEmerald Cloud Lab Jan 2023 - Nov 2023- As first technical contributor on business/tech cross-functional features team, I implemented improvements to a core experiment type for one of our most important customers and managed a project to bring a new experiment type online to facilitate a new customer's pilot- Abstracted scientific experiments in code as user-facing functions with smart, responsive default options, allowing customers to specify protocols to run remotely in ECL's facility- Wrote functions to convert user inputs to database objects containing or linking to all the information (including representations of physical resources) required to run experiments with user samples- Participated in multiple all-hands-on-deck hazardous material handling, instrumentation, and software update efforts centered around moving ECL's physical laboratory from the Bay Area to Austin, TX -
Synthetic Biologist - Thermoregulating Bacteria For Engineered Living MaterialsCaltech Sep 2016 - Dec 2022- Experience communicating my interdisciplinary PhD thesis project to diverse audiences, as evidenced by publication of 2 first-author peer-reviewed manuscripts, renewal of my collaboration’s grant, a presentation at a national conference, and an invited guest lecture in an undergraduate chemical engineering class at Caltech- Adaptability and innovation across disciplines, as demonstrated by building a custom instrument in my living room during the COVID-19 pandemic before transferring it to the lab, enabling a new method for assaying bacteria growth under illumination- Supportive mentor of a visiting master’s student, a visiting artist, and a visiting undergraduate student over three summers, developing both their scientific mindset and their writing and presentation skills- Organization and time management demonstrated by quickly learning the basis of a technology new to our lab, making decisions on instrument components, and completing the purchase of a major instrument for our lab within weeks of joining the team -
Founding Materials Engineer - Phase-Change Materials For BuildingsCoolcomposites, Inc Jun 2015 - Jun 2016- Strong project management skills as the first employee and research lead for a pre-seed building materials startup, leading to a provisional patent- Creativity in methods development gained while operating under a shoestring budget, resulting in cost-savings that allowed strategic equipment purchases once we earned NSF SBIR Phase I- Fundraising skills developed through writing grants and pitching to investors and incubators, resulting in NSF SBIR Phase IB, strategic partnership/investment, and admission to the MassChallenge Boston incubator -
Undergraduate Researcher - Systems BiologyHarvard Medical School Jun 2014 - Aug 2014With Dr. Tami Lieberman and Dr. Roy Kishony, I studied the evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis during infection of individuals and the prevalence of infection with multiple strains using high-throughput whole genome next-generation sequencing. -
Undergraduate Researcher - NeuroscienceMassachusetts Institute Of Technology Oct 2013 - May 2014With Dr. Aranda Duan and Dr. Matt Wilson, I investigated the causal role of delta oscillations in producing the working memory deficits in schizophrenia using optogenetics. -
Undergraduate Researcher - Synthetic BiologyMassachusetts Institute Of Technology Mar 2012 - Nov 2012Working with a team of undergraduates and Dr. Deepak Mishra, I helped develop a novel technique for RNA strand displacement for information processing in mammalian cells. Our team won a gold medal at the iGEM Americas East Regional Jamboree.
