My main function is the monitoring of climate, vegetation, fire and priority species (Cape mountain zebra, black rhino, leopard and Hewitt’s ghost frog) with telemetry, camera traps, remote sensing, field surveys, foot patrols, fixed-point photography and data loggers. In order to compile and/or update species inventories, I conduct and/or participate in field surveys (mostly reptile, amphibian and small mammal surveys) and arrange the logistics for these surveys.My work further involves participation in the ECPTA’s annual aerial game census and the game capture (mostly Cape buffalo) operations. I arrange and participate in black rhino notching and RhoDIS sample collection exercises.I support the Stewardship Program by conducting site assessments, compiling APO’s in conjunction with private landowners and conduct APO audits.GIS and technical support are provided to the Regional Ecologist, Reserve Managers and private landowners of the Stewardship Program and I support the Working on Water Program with GIS mapping and site assessments.The administrative component of my job involves report writing, asset management and procurement. -
Marine Monitoring CoordinatorSouth African National Parks (Sanparks) Jul 2012 - Mar 2013Addo Elephant National Park - Woody Cape SectionAs Marine Monitoring Coordinator it was my responsibility to independently plan, co-ordinate and implement the Working for the Coast (EPWP) Marine Monitoring Project in Addo Elephant National Park. I determined the priorities and research methodologies of the program. I appointed a team of marine monitors and conducted their training in roving creel surveys of shore-angling. I developed and managed a work schedule for the marine monitoring staff and conducted quality control of work conducted.I was further responsible for all the data capturing, validation and verification, database management and report writing, as well as the management of the project's finances according to the requirements of the different funding organisations. -
