As a head of the Transmission Business Unit, I am responsible for the all the divisions within the Business Unit, namely: Engineering Services (see my previous role); Network Operations, System Security and Planning, Wires Business (see my previous role), Technical Stores, Capital Projects, Supply Business and The GridOnline (Fiber commercialization business)

Engineering Services serves all NamPower transmission infrastructure through the following operational areas: PTM&C - (Protection, Telecommunication, Metering and Control); AMD - (Asset Maintenance Division) for installation and maintenance if the primary equipment; and (PSC) Power System Construction which deals with new works such as lines and substations. Engineering Services is thus responsible for the construction, installation, testing, commissioning of new transmission assets, as well as maintenance of all primary (Transformers, Reactors, CTs VTs Capacitors and Switchgear) and secondary equipment (DC systems, protection systems, Telecom Systems, Metering, SCADA and control systems).

Technical Support Services through privision of engineering services for major maintenance and modernisation of all electrical systems ( Instrumentations, SCADA, Control and Protection) as well as mechanical systems (Boilers, Generators and Turbines).Provision of engineering solutions to major generation projects either new or refurbishment projects.

Focus Areas:• Wires (Substations and lines)To ensure that the assets are run at optimum condition• ProjectsTransmission Wires Business ensures with the initiation of any project, that the Scope of Work is finalised, designs approved, assets are commissioned, operated and maintained to NamPower Transmission standards and specifications as required.• Planning and OperationKey drivers regarding planning and operations are:o Site identification o Needs for System Strengtheningo Identification of load encroachment• FACTSWires Business is responsible for Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and this expertise is used in planning and advising on the operating regime of our FACTS• CommunicationContinuously assess the communications network and infrastructure in NamPower from a Wires Business perspective to maintain uniform and integrated telecommunication solutions across the entire network to ensure a highly effective communications infrastructure. Liaising with Namibia’s communication providers on issues of common interests.o Asses OPGW and or MASS capacity and redundancyo Asses PLC linkso Asses SCADA telecommunications channels and redundancy• SAPP and Regional StandAsset Owner to play a meaningful role in the discussions and plans that are in the interest of regional transmission development.

Nampower

Responsible and accountable for the following:1. Total operation and management of National Control.2. Managing National Control and the complete NamPower System in such manner that the following is strictly adhered to:a) Safety of operating personnel, safety of equipment and continuity of supply to customers.b) Compliance to power supply contracts and various Memoranda of Understanding.c) Operate the NamPower system on a least cost resource planning principle without sacrificing any reliability criteria.d) Risk assessment of the total NamPower Operations.3. Energy, Capacity and Reserve trading with Eskom, other SAPP utilities and future Independent Power Producers (IPP).4. Co-ordination of Planning and Operational Matters with neighbouring SAPP utilities and future IPPs.5. Negotiations of inter-utility power supply contracts.6. Advising in any Planning issues pertaining to existing and future National Control establishment as well as on any planned NamPower network extensions.7. Supervising and advising in all matters regarding the NamPower Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

- Protection, Testing and CommmisioningTesting of the HV equipment (Power Transformers, CTs, VTs, Reclosers) ; Wiring and modification of Relay Panels; Building and calibrating of test apparatus; Testing of both new and old Protection Schemes and individual relays; Testing and commissioning of substations or part thereof; as well as General fault-finding in the NamPower’s network, from Transmission lines and Subsstations of 400kV down to the distribution lines and substations of 11kV.
