This publication presented an incredible opportunity for me to explore a fresh design aesthetic while drawing on new trends, talents, and creatives in the region. Consultant (launch) Art Director for This is YUNG - a new audio-visual media platform in the Middle East and Africa celebrating global art, fashion, music and culture. The brand was created to exhibit remarkable talent from these regions and provide innovative ways to discover and create content with a 360 degree approach.

I was appointed as the Art Director with a new team to work on the redesign of both GQ and GQStyle South Africa. In close collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, Nkosiyati Khumalo, and Fashion Director, Rusty Beukes, the task was to give both magazines a fresh, contemporary look. A bold, graphic, and minimalist visual identity was introduced. With a climate of systemic gender-based violence in South Africa, a big part of the new brand messaging of GQ was to show women in a new light - the brand was previously well-known for showing stereotypical, over-sexualized women. Our first cover starred businesswoman and celebrity, Bonang Matheba, and was the first stand-alone female cover in GQ South Africa’s history. Entitled ‘The Power Issue’, the art direction, styling, and typography was all intended to represent her strength, power, and femininity. I assisted the in-house team of art directors and designers for the Condé Nast titles GQ South Africa, and Glamour South Africa

• Assisted the Head of Design at New Media Publishing, Mark Serra, with the design of South African retail chain Woolworths’ Christmas catalogue and W magazine.• Worked with the Art Director of Marie Claire South Africa, Juan Geel, with the redesign of the magazine for Associated Media Publishing.•Creative direction and design for new business accounts and branding for a range of clients such as: Edgars (supplements, gift guides, advertising, and magazine design), retailer Pick ‘n Pay Fresh Living Magazine and Nutriwise in-store supplements, Cosmopolitan Magazine, House & Leisure Magazine, Leisure Books Magazine and Good Housekeeping Magazine.• Guest lecturer in Communication Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town.

John Brown Media is a worldwide content marketing agency. Working in their Cape Town office I was responsible for the art direction for the South African retailer Edgars’ Privilege Programme and in-store magazine, Edgars Club.
