My postdoctoral research has primarily focused on the pharmacological characterization of a novel group of small molecules in cell based assays and in animal models. I have been particularly interested in evaluating the neuroprotective potential of these small molecules in a mouse model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a rapidly progressing fatal neurodegenerative disease. Towards that end, I have treated SOD1-G93A mice (the most well characterized and widely used mouse model of ALS) and have examined physiological and pathological parameters to assess the neuroprotective effects of these small molecules.

I was a graduate student in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.My graduate research focused primarily on the pharmacological characterization of marine toxins and synthetic analogs of these toxins on central nervous system glutamate receptors. I used a range of experimental techniques for this characterization, including calcium-imaging, radioligand binding assays, and patch clamp electrophysiology. In addition to my thesis project, I performed experiments that contributed to a number of additional projects ongoing in the laboratory.
