About Leanne Turner

The 15th May 2009 was the day I realised my life had changed forever. It was the day after my baby died. I walked out of the Maternity unit a broken woman. There was no baby in my arms, no bundle of joy, just pain and devastation. As the days passed and my body healed from labouring our tiny 23 week baby, my arms started to ache. The longing intensified day after day after day. I thought I was going crazy, madness setting in, grief breaking me even more... until I found a community, one no one ever wants to be a member of, the bereaved mother community. In those dark, raw days, they held me, understood me and their arms ached too. 12 months later I founded Aching Arms. The pregnancy and baby loss charity. 15 years on I am an experienced charity Founder with a history of working in the mental health and well being care industry. On top of my 18 years as a secondary school teacher, Education Consultant and Teacher Educator, over the last 14 years I have grown a charity from a grassroots enterprise to a small national charity. I have skills in Learning and Development, Collaborative Problem Solving, Well Being at work and Team Management and enjoy public speaking. And my arms still ache for my baby.

Aching Arms is a registered baby loss charity run by a group of bereaved parents who have experienced the pain and emptiness of leaving hospital without their much loved baby. Our work is focused on bringing comfort and support to bereaved parents and their families after the loss of a baby and raising awareness of the impact of pregnancy and baby loss, Through a network of volunteers we provide Aching Arms Bears to 192 NHS hospitals in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for midwives and nurses to give to recently bereaved parents. We also support families across the UK who contact us via our website, email, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and post bears to them directly. In 2020 we launched our 'Supporting Arms' helpline service. We can be contacted via support@achingarms.co.uk text/call 07464508994. In March 2022 we launched 'Supporting Arms for Dads' a monthly online session for bereaved Dads. We also launched our 'Be Together' programme in December 2021. It's aim is to bring families together for friendship with the shared knowledge that they are not alone. We offer free awareness training workshops to maternity services health professionals working in UK hospitals. The aim of the training is to build their confidence in supporting bereaved parents. We also offer workplace bereavement advice and training for employers, their HR teams, their people managers and wider team of employees. I am also available to speak about my story of loss, how I was inspired to establish James' legacy and how you can better support bereaved parents you know.
