Dr. Leanne Young began her career at Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) as an engineer and statistician, conducting blast injury research for the Department of Defense. Over the course of 20 years, Dr. Young became a nationally recognized expert in blast injuries, both those occurring in combat and those resulting from terrorist attacks. She worked with the Department of Defense’s Combatting Terrorism Technology Support Office to obtain the first histological evidence of primary blast-induced brain injuries. She worked with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to lead the first clinical trials in the United States of blast-induced brain injuries and, working with the Office of Naval Research, she led development of a computer model for planning the medical response to a blast attack on a ship. After 20 years as an engineer, Dr. Young took a “vacation” to obtain a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience. As a neuroscientist, her research interests range from social neuroscience to interventions that promote strengthening higher order cognitive functions in both healthy individuals and those recovering from traumatic brain injuries. Upon completion of her doctorate, Dr. Young joined The University of Texas at Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth to lead its Brain Performance Institute. While at the Institute she led a team of scientists and clinicians conducting translational research to deliver to the public – individuals, corporations, military personnel, law enforcement personnel and youth – validated cognitive neuroscience innovations that can improve both brain health and performance. In 2019, Dr. Young returned to ARA, where she is once again conducting research for the Department of Defense – this time leveraging her doctoral research to study social cognition in human-agent teams, cognitive performance augmentation via neurostimulation, and reducing the risk of brain health declines due to stress or injury. More recently, Dr. Young has taken a position as the manager of Berriehill Research Division of ARA. With offices in Ohio, California and Colorado, this division specializes in testing, measurement, modeling and manufacturing in the field of electromagnetics. It supports the aerospace industry and a variety of customers within the US Government.
