I decided that I wanted to try something new which lead me towards the Optical Assistant position at Specsavers. I was still within my comfort zone as it was a retail job which is what I was used to, however there was also a healthcare side to the job which I found very interesting. It is a position where I can get stuck in and am working in a busy team environment. As an optical assistant I advise customers on the best frames and lenses based on their lifestyle, and dispensing their glasses to a high standard. After a couple of months, I was trained in collections and adjustments, and also pre-testing so that I could help out the clinical team where they needed it. My days are now a lot more varied and it’s a really enjoyable experience being able to work on different departments with different people!

After spending almost 3 years as a sales assistant, I then moved branches within the same company following a promotion to Key-Holder. This was very similar to my role as a sales assistant as I still followed all of the requirements that the role required. However, I also gained experience in opening and closing the store, leading my own team to be able to achieve targets and sales for the day. I gained experience in customer complaints which got forwarded to my manager, or that I may have been able to deal with myself such as processing refunds and authorising discounts. My manager also trained me in product merchandising, and also some of the requirements that she had within her position such as KPI’s so that I was able to gain a lot of experience throughout different aspects of the company and was always learning.

I originally started working at the Card Factory as a seasonal sales assistant. I received training in all different aspects of the store such as cash handling, merchandising and customer service skills and always making the customers experience in store as pleasant as possible. Once the Christmas period was over, I was offered a permanent contract in the store. This lead to further opportunities such as being able to do night shift the next Christmas which was an exciting experience and it was interesting to be able to see a different aspect of the job as it included the same amount of hard work and energy as a daytime shift as we had to have the shop filled and looking presentable before it opened.
