I worked in this position for 8 years; I began in the aquatics department where I helped customers with issues relating to pets and aquatics. I showed my manager my excellent customer service skills in my role as aquatics customer advisor and so I was till trained and moved to the front of the store onto the information desk. In this role I have furthered my customer service skills as well as my ability to handle difficult situations with customer enquiries and cash handling. Whilst here I have also taken part in many charity events to raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust, an example of this is a sponsored cycle from Ponteland to Melville (Image below of myself and the team), as well as in store fundraising.

Worked on the University Survival Guide (USG), Bitesize University (BSU) and PARTNERS Summer schools with Newcastle University as a student rep, as well as working as a general student ambassador throughout the year. Within this role I helped sixth form students with their potential progression towards the university through giving advice and support during their time on the summer schools, as well as staying residentially in the Newcastle University accommodation and being the main contact for around 10 prospective students taking part in the summer schools. Furthermore, I conducted campus tours for the university open days, showing prospective students and their families around the university and answering any questions they may have prior to beginning their studies with us.

I gained laboratory experience within Newcastle University over the summer of 2017 by assisting a post doctorate with a project working directly with industry. Throughout this placement I gained valuable laboratory skills that are vital for future careers as well as gaining knowledge regarding the marine biotechnology sector. I became confident with the use of laboratory equipment including:- Autoclaves- Spectrophotometer- Centrifuges- MicropipettesFurthermore, I gained knowledge regarding general safe working practices within a biotechnology laboratory.

I took part in a number of different open days and outreach sessions at the Dove Marine Laboratory for Newcastle University. As a part of my role I educated the public about marine science and what common species are found on our coastline as well as how they could get involved with marine science. This was done by taking children out onto our coastline and conducting rocky shore investigations with them and further educating them about what they found through touch tanks and presentations.
