In the Nelson Lab, LeAnn focuses on designing and characterizing microbial systems in in 3D-printable Engineered Living Materials (ELMs) with the goal of creating sustainable bio-hybrid alternatives for industry and healthcare applications.

In Dr. Alon Gorodetsky's group, LeAnn explored structural properties of Reflectin, such as aggregation, film formation, and higher order structures, using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging.

During COVID, LeAnn worked on large-scale sequencing, optimization, and quality control of viral test kits.

Used cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine the structure of viral fusion proteins involved in virulence and replication of Herpesvirus Simplex 1 (HSV-1) and Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV). Advisor: Professor Z. Hong Zhou

LeAnn was a full-time research fellow, supported by Professor Hong Z. Zhou, working on cryo-EM sample preparation and developing cryo-EM imaging and data processing skills. Mentor: Kevin Huynh

During COVID, LeAnn compiled resources pertaining to biosensing & viral detection methods for improvement of science communication. Additionally, LeAnn worked on designing a micro-fluidic device for therapeutics targeting the Blood-Brain-Barrier.Advisor: Dr. Kiana Aran
