In addition to the adult and pediatric patients seen with clinical geneticist, Dr. Ilse Anderson, I provided genetic counseling for patients with personal and family histories of cancer, cardiac issues, and other diverse referrals. The University Genetics group sees patients for a wide variety of referral reasons including developmental delay, possible connective tissue disorders, autism spectrum disorders, hereditary hearing or vision loss, hereditary cardiac disorders, and referrals for hereditary conditions such as Huntington's disease and other hereditary neurological disorders or dementias. Responsibilities of the position included record review prior to patient appointments, medical history and family history intake with 3 generation pedigree, risk assessment, genetic testing consent (microarray/single gene/multi-gene panels and whole exome sequencing) and test coordination, result interpretation and disclosure (including review of pertinent medical literature) with patient and family, review of medical management with patient and family, and discussion of further testing for appropriate family members based on results. In this role, I reviewed the patient lists for the clinic and identified patients for genetic counseling and genetic testing based on their personal and/or family history, contacted the patients, and discussed available genetic testing. One specific goal was to reach out to patients affected with ovarian cancer and offer genetic testing. I facilitated sample collections, ordered appropriate genetic testing, and provided genetic counseling follow-up to discuss results and any family cascade testing needed. Documentation of visits and any additional support information was provided to patients and providers. Additionally, I attended weekly pathology conference for identification of patients for genetics services, and managed data from pathology studies for identification of patients for follow-up testing for Lynch syndrome.
