I’ve spent my career at the intersection of AI and education, focused on making technologies to enhance teaching and learning. My research and development work is centered on creating technologies that open up new possibilities in education. I’m committed to building technologies that not only provide all students with access to quality learning experiences but also help learners become more aware of their knowledge, abilities, and skills and empower them to make decisions on their learning journey.As Director of ML/NLP Research at Pearson's Assessments and Qualifications division, I manage a team responsible for advancing machine learning, natural language processing, and AI in automated assessment. Our work improves the accuracy, safety, and fairness of high-stakes assessments, from scoring to identifying at-risk learners and detecting cheating. I also collaborate with colleagues across learning science, psychometrics, sales, and product teams to shape AI strategy for School Assessments and the broader organization.Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of building and leading teams that drive innovation in educational technology. In previous roles, I’ve recruited and mentored talent, set research agendas, and defined product visions that align with our goals. I’ve also remained hands-on, contributing to the development of underlying machine learning models and software that power our solutions. A common thread in my work has been the modeling of complex cognitive and linguistic behaviors, always with the aim of enhancing educational outcomes and providing meaningful support to learners.
