After working for others I decided with the backing of my family to set up and run Callender Recruitment which lets me deal with all aspects of running a recruitment business. Initially I had to look after all aspects of the business and as time went on the number of staff grew which has let me look into more sales and development areas. In the first year I achieved a turnover of £190 000 and that was from a standing start (no clients were taken from old agencies), grew my consultants to 3 up to the first half of the second year, our highest amount of temps out was 96 on a margin of £1.30. we also still have the contract for Newcastle racecourse and 5 councils. As the recession hit we have found it harder to break even thus it is being wound down. In the 1st year I turned over £180,000 from a standing start and I am winding up Callender Recruitment as the recession has hit the construction industry very hard and for personal reasons.

I grew the construction department from £2000 to £14000 per week in a matter of 6 months and built a team of 6 consultants. We were averaging 180 temps per week with an average margin of £1.60. I started as a consultant and within 8 months was promoted, in the time I spent there I was put through the Adecco academy and won and serviced large contracts such as Atmel and Nestle Findus. I and my team of 6 looked after around 250 - 300 temps per day and I controlled all budgets and managerial issues plus retaining business development and continued sales. In this time I started 2 new desks Catering and Technical which were very successful with my drive to develop and win new business and sectors I had full control of P&L, tendering for contracts, business development and recruitment of staff, marketing and everything that would fall under a large branch managers role (as bullet points above

I was on a fast track management course where the training for running a business and all other aspects were second to none. The high failure rate and high pass mark meant that a full understanding of business in general was needed to succeed.
