Profile bio

About Lee Carter

I am a highly experienced senior IT professional with over 20 years of Wintel experience. I have a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Business IT and passed the CCNA some years ago. I currently support over 600 customers for a commercial IT support provider that specialise in an MS SQL based MIS (SIMS) for the Education Sector. I take the lead on Office 365 migrations and support for our customers and also have strong skills in Windows Server NT-2016, Windows 3 to 10, Active Directory, Networks, iOS and MDM integration, IT Project management, client facing and backend support and Virtualisation (VMware, HyperV, and Virtual Box) .Over the 20 years I have gained many skills and experiences that range from managing a team of IT technicians that built (and managged) the IT infrastructure and systems for a large High School. I started at the school when they had some Acorn computers and a few PCs and developed them over a 10 period to over 800 devices (PCs, Macs, Laptops and iPads). To my current employer that supports over 600 customers spread across England and Wales which requires remote management and telephone/helpdesk support methods, this has given me a solid understanding of IT SLA management and CRM.I feel I have many personal traits that any employer will find attractive: I am dependable, highly motivated, patience and logical which makes me a very good problem solver. I’m as good working in a team as working individually on a project or problem. I have a good telephone manor with none technical people and will often use humour to release the tension of a frustrated customer.I always take responsibility for my work and ownership of my responsibilities, so I can take pride for a job well done. I feel excited at the thought of learning new skills, new methods and technology and I am looking for a new challenge to take my career forward.

Listed skills include Servers, Windows 7, Network Administration, Windows Server, and 40 others.

Projects And Escalation Technician

Leeds, Leeds, United Kingdom

Projects & Escalation Technician

Leeds, England, United Kingdom

Customers of Mtech span most sectors of industry from finance to care. I am one of nine senior technicians that undertake projects and escalation work. My first two months with the company were dedicated to ‘sticky’ tickets and learning the tech stack. Following that I led on a 4-month project to help a large distribution company move buildings and simplify their IT environment ready for a managed service network in the new building (provided by a third party). This project included the merging of two Windows domains, merging and removing 15 VLANs, replacing the Firewall, replacing the VPN concentrator, updating service and management tools for an IBM AS400 & IBM RS6000 mainframes, Sage migration, a new Remote Desktop Server and migrating services from 2003 Windows Servers to 2022 Servers. This project required me to work with the existing IT staff, contractors that the business directly employed and third-party specialist support companies. My role added extra technical expertise to the AD Domain element and Networking elements plus to drive the changes by mapping out what was needed and co-ordinating with the business (and others). Following on there were several smaller projects to update 2012 Servers to 2022, one included all new hardware and the others used existing Hyper-V Server capacity.

It Consultant

Leeds, United Kingdom

Working within the education sector, I was one of three senior technicians within a 17-strong technical team, responsible for over 1000 customer sites spread across the UK. Within the company I took the technical lead on the managed service element for the 52 local customers that received proactive visits and the customers who subscribed to a reactive service where visits are on a needs basis. The Managed Service Team consisted of myself plus eight technicians. As well as helping the managed service technicians I undertook migration projects. I also developed two chargeable consultancy services (which were my idea); one was implementing the new DFE technology standards and the other was a server migration method that reduced disruption and downtime to near zero.My role changed between 100% site work (when cover was needed) to 80% desk based and 20% on sites. In the past, (when behind a desk) I played a strong part in the company’s support helpdesk. My call closure rate was the second highest on the team; only my line manager who was 95% desk based had a higher closure rate. Helpdesk work was very varied from the basic new users and password issues to complex network integration problems and SQL server service failures. l normally focussed on the harder problems and problems within high schools. Many customers asked for me as they had confidence that I would be able to resolve their problems efficiently. My onsite time was split between regular managed service visits where we performed repairs and upgrades to classroom/office PCs, interactive whiteboards and iPads and visiting ‘downed’ sites when remote support was not viable due to network or hardware problems. My 2022 annual review was really good (as were all past reviews) and I was given a “performing above expectations” rating.

Sep 2013 - Apr 2023

It Manager

Bruntcliffe School

I am responsible for all aspects of managing the development and maintenance of the IT needs for a large high school with 1700 users plus a large primary school with 450 users. This includes the network infrastructure, the servers, workstations, information management systems, backup and all other technical equipment used to run and deliver teaching in a modern school. I manage a team of 3 full time IT technicians plus casual staff when needed at busy times. I (with help from the technicians) undertake all technical support and development work needed at the school; outside consultants are only used for the very large projects. I have created policies, run training courses, ensured that system changes are documented and that all documentation is up to date and accurate. My working environment is very busy and dynamic. The servers are Wintel 2003/2008 and fully virtualised using VMware' ESX. I have about 700 PCs and Laptops (some Win7 but mostly running XP Pro) plus some Apple Macs across the two schools to support.
