As a Leading engineering technician marine engineer in the Royal Navy, I act in a managerial capacity taking charge of a group of engineers to carry out various tasks essential for the day to day running of the ship. I have to know how to prioritise jobs, conferring with other LETs in charge of different engineering sections on the ship, to ensure maintenance and repairs are carried out efficiently and effectively with the least disruption to the operational capability of the ship as a whole. This entails knowing not just how my department operates, but how any work carried out by myself or my subordinates might affect other departments. Acting as a manager, I also need to take an active interest in the people that work for me, so I can gain understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and offer coaching and instruction to help with their career progression. As well as being in charge of a body of engineers, my duties involve being a go-between the people that work for me, and my manager, so that any problems they might have in their day to day work life or outside, don't go unresolved. Being a Marne Engineer in the Royal Navy, one of the most important jobs I have is watchkeeping. This is where the ships equipment and systems is monitored through a command system on the ship, and rounds are carried out to ensure systems and equipment are running correctly. This involves both remotely and locally operating controls, and whenever necessary, carrying out repairs. As a member of the Royal Navy, it is also my responsibility to be in date with my fire fighting, health and safety and first aid training, as well as an competencies relevant to my job, such as being HV competent. This applies more significantly to me, as a LET is expected to take charge of formed bodies of men in firefighting situations on ship.
