I served as a microbiologist in the generation of ethanol as a renewable fuel source from a variety of cellulosic and hemicellulosic biomass feedstocks. I also worked in yeast genetics to produce a wide variety of mutants with phenotypes beneficial to increased ethanol production.

I worked with a Cardiology lab in the generation of viral vectors targeted at the treatment of various types of inherited heart disease. Specifically, I assisted with adenovirus, adeno-associated virus, herpes viruses and retrovirus-based vectors. I also served as an independent contractor for the Department of Infectious Diseases at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. The focus of project was to extract and examine RNA and DNA from nasal swabs of vaccinated children in tropical regions. The corresponding viral nucleic acids were amplified by real-time PCR and identified through sequencing. Specifically, I identified various respiratory viruses which included influenza, parainfluenza, RSV, CMV and many other viral pathogens.
Consultant for a start-up biotech company developing strategies utilizing phage against antibiotic resistant infections in the human host. Furthermore, I served as an advisor for the generation of novel therapies against HIV targeted at the integration and gene expression levels.

I utilized mammalian cell culture lines and human sensory neurons obtained post-mortem for determining the mechanism of Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) reactivation resulting in Zoster (Shingles). In this effort, I demonstrated regulation of latency occurs at the chromatin level in the human host.
