I have been writing independent journalism for ten years. During this time I have educated myself extensively in the numerous disciplines and areas of knowledge which impact on the subjects I write about, including: drugs (law, pharmacology, sociology, psychiatry, harm reduction), politics (economics, international relations, political philosophy), and various others. Publishing my work independently, I have also spent these years cultivating the many skills, secondary to writing, which are needed in journalism: newspaper/magazine layout, website design (and other basic graphic design: logos, business cards, blog banners, social media ads), marketing, and social media management.

  Miscellaneous Debris was my first try at establishing a brand and a readership on Substack after writing only on WordPress for many years. Between June 2021 and August 2022, I wrote and published 38 articles, gained 45 free subscribers, and a little over 5,000 article reads. These are admittedly modest results, but I learned a great deal in the process.
