For the past three summers, I have volunteered to teach English and Art in Palomas, Mexico; an experience that has compelled me to re-examine my teaching style and empathize with the diverse learners in my classroom. I lecture less and listen more. I question instead of telling, and encourage my students to be curious and informed citizens. I’ve become an advocate for improving educational opportunities for students on both sides of border. In July of 2018, I was hired Deming Public Schools as a fifth grade teacher in Columbus, New Mexico. My students, all US citizens living in Mexico, cross the border every morning to attend school in the United States. Currently working as a substitute teacher in Falls Church Public Schools while I earn my certifications in special ed and English as a second language. My students inspire me through their unshakable determination to be educated and contributing members of the communities on both sides of the border.
