bp ShippingResponsible for seafarer health protection aboard a global fleet of oil and gas (LNG) vessels. The role included the provision of environmental health support including food hygiene and water quality as well as health in design work such as to prevent hazardous materials being used in new ship construction. What I enjoyed most was working with the diverse, front line teams when undertaking training and technical assessments, as well as the project management roles I undertook at overseas construction and repair shipyards. Major accomplishments included;• achieving asbestos free fleet status.• the agreement and publication of controls for naturally occurring radiation – a first for the LNG shipping industry. • improvement of chemical risk assessment process and the elimination of a number of carcinogens. Additional to my role, between 2014 and 2017 I covered the post of Health Manager, responsible for managing multiple international medical service contracts. More recently on the digital agenda I began a project to capture exposure data from personal gas detectors using centralised portal software. While at bp Shipping I actively participated in a number of maritime industry bodies, such as the UK Port Health Group and the UK Chamber of Shipping, providing specialist industrial hygiene advice for the benefit of the wider merchant shipping industry.

During operational tours I worked as part of a multinational team that provided health protection to front line personnel. Conditions were austere and required the ability to work autonomously as the subject matter expert on topics such as vector-borne disease and climatic injury prevention.Recognising at an early stage in my career the importance of mental health to overall health, I undertook the Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) Practitioner course. TRiM is widely used throughout the armed forces: practitioners are trained to spot signs of distress and to help peers who have experienced traumatic events.
