I am a doctoral student at Washington University in St. Louis, where I study urban growth and the formation of neighborhoods in medieval Italy. My current research explores monastic “borgi” in late medieval Genoa, suburban neighborhoods made up of tenants renting land from a nearby monastery. I examine the social topography, class makeup, and connectivity of these neighborhoods, with a particular focus on the functions of tenants in the production of monastic documents, in which they frequently acted as witnesses, counselors. procurators, and arbiters for their monastic landlords. I am also creating an interactive map of Genoese ecclesiastical patrimonies and urban territories using ArcGIS.
