About Lee Aarons
A highly effective and experienced chemical engineer, educator, numerical modeler, researcher, and data scientist with more than 6 years of professional research experience, currently seeking a position as a researcher or data scientist. Versatile skill set with broad experience in machine learning, big data, web scraping, data visualization, granular materials, simulation coding and analysis, discrete element method, multi-scale computational modeling, and rock mechanics. Familiar with and greatly interested in CFD. Well-versed in C++, FORTRAN, Python, and MATLAB.Have experience with analyzing and handling data using MATLAB, Python (scikit-learn, pandas, matplotlib, bokeh, etc.), SQL, Spark, Hadoop, and MapReduce. Experienced with many facets of machine learning, including regression, classification, and clustering (unsupervised learning). Researched the fracture behavior of concrete, the residual stress of fractured ceramics, and the hydrofracking of shale using finite element/difference simulations at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Researched the mixing and mechanics of cohesive granular materials under shear using discrete element method simulations as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Florida and as a graduate researcher at Princeton University, respectively.Special abilities include problem solving capabilities, writing journal articles, and preparing and giving presentations. Have demonstrated ability to learn programming languages, simulation techniques, and engineering software quickly. Experienced and effective in working in groups and on my own.
Listed skills include Science, Materials Science, Mathematical Modeling, Chemistry, and 22 others.

Data Scientist
Mastered the ins and outs of data science, including web scraping, SQL, Spark, MapReduce, machine learning (regression, classification, and clustering using scikit-learn), time series, digital signal analysis, and NLP.Projects worked on included predicting Yelp scores for businesses based on characteristics of the businesses and text reviews, predicting temperatures based on historical data, predicting video game sales based on review scores, identifying the genres of songs based on mp3 files, and calculating various statistics on very large numbers of forum posts (using Spark), the contents of large numbers of Wikipedia posts (using MapReduce), and databases of restaurants (using SQL). All projects involved coding in Python.
Part-Time Professor
Taught "Introduction to Engineering" to classes of about 30 students for two termsSet own curriculum and created own teaching materialHeld office hours
Postdoctoral Researcher
Researched the fracture behavior of brittle materials (concrete, ceramics) under various loading conditions and shale during hydrofracking. Helped to write and debug finite element/difference (FEM/FDM) code used to simulate the fracture of concrete and ceramics. Created meshes (Cubit) of concrete cylinders and ran the simulations, attempting to reproduce observed stress-strain relationships for concrete. Analyzed the results (using VisIt and gnuplot) to determine if and how the code fell short and made corrections or reported my findings to teammates. Added capability to determine connectivity of fractured meshes spanning multiple processors. Created meshes for and ran simulations of pre-fractured ceramics under compression and analyzed the results to model the relationship between residual strength and applied pressure (received 2014 Directorate Silver Award from Global Security for this work). Created meshes (Cubit) of boreholes in slate for use in hydrofracking simulations. Developed method to evenly partition mesh between processors using irregular hexahedral boundaries. Ran hydrofracking simulations in an attempt to capture realistic fracture propagation (most notably "fracture turning"). Analyzed the results (using Python and VisIt) to determine if and how the code fell short and reported findings to teammates.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Researched the mixing and shock loading of granular materials. Modified LAMMPS (an open-source, multi-processor MD/DEM code from Sandia National Laboratories), using C++, to simulate the shearing of cohesive granular materials between particle-coated plates. Ran simulations to model the mixing of cohesive granular materials consisting of particles of different sizes with and without gravity. Analyzed the simulations, using a variety of metrics to quantify the homogeneity of mixtures. Determined how the mixture homogeneity was affected by shearing speed and particle cohesion.Used LAMMPS to simulate the shock loading of non-cohesive monodisperse granular materials. Analyzed the simulations to determine how the porosity, stress, energy, and exit velocity of particles varied with initial porosity and impact velocity.
