Curious creator. Lifelong learner. Passionate about technology, but more specifically how technology can help humans live better. As a father of two daughters, I believe it's critical to instill a love for innovation in children and support women in the largely male dominated technology field.I received my first computer at 10, fell in love, and have spent the last 20 years in technology. Along the way I've been lucky enough to work on a few cool projects including the beginning of smartphones at BlackBerry, NSA tamper-detection technology for the White House, the intersection of blockchain and cybersecurity, static/dynamic app security testing, helping to develop a portfolio of ultra-secure collaboration technology for the United Arab Emirates, and most recently, building embedded crypto infrastructure to enable fintechs to easily embrace the next 500M crypto users.Occasionally I dabble in side projects, and have working on everything from a Facebook app that derived a "social IQ score", to cryptocurrency tools, to an IoT device that used the process of atomization for a humidity controlled environment.I can't help but come up with ideas, or stop the desire to build them. :-)

Software DeveloperResearch In Motion Sep 2006 - Oct 2008Waterloo, Ontario, CaI got bored of looking at code in support, and decided I actually wanted to write code. A development manager took a chance on me (thanks Carl), even though I had no formal computer science background, and the next thing I knew I was neck deep in C++, C+, Java, JNI, JSP, VB, and others. The team I joined was the Development Solutions Group (DSG), a somewhat rogue team that built custom software solutions for strategic customers. To cut my teeth I started on a project to create an all encompassing data collection tool for the support organization (that I had actually been asking dev to create for over a year). That project spun into two paths, a polished tool for the support folks to use, and a library that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installer used to detect prerequisites upon installation. I created many custom solutions for our Fortune 500 clients, then the team changed a bit and we found ourselves working on a BES migration tool that was ultimately called the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter, even though this was our fictitious internal name. Gotta love marketing departments...and careful what you wish for.Highlights:* Creating a tool for support and BES installation that was reported to save well over $1M yearly in support costs* Creating numerous custom solutions for some of BlackBerry's best and biggest customers* Diving very deep into software development and soaking up everything I could get my hands on to read, going back to some of the classics like Stroustrup's own C++ books* Learning more about SNMP, COM+ and Shared Memory than I care to remember* Being part of the core design and development team for the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter, which was released and subsequently used by 1000's of customers to migrate millions of BlackBerry users from BES 4.x to BES 5.x* Actually making use of three 21" monitors, and not just having them for show :-) -
Principal AnalystResearch In Motion Nov 2004 - Sep 2006Waterloo, Ontario, CaArmed with 3 years of in-depth BlackBerry Server and Handheld troubleshooting, and hundreds of hours spent coding sophisticated Perl scripts for multi-gigabyte logfile analysis, I was ready for the big leagues (of tech that is). The Principal Analyst position is the top of the technical support food chain, working the most grisliest of problems that the worldwide support team could come up with, for some of the biggest and most important organizations in the world. The killer feature of this role was full code access to the BlackBerry software base, allowing Principal Analysts to dive right to the bits and bytes level to come up with elegant solutions and guide development in corrective actions. I also got the chance to work with some of the smartest people I've ever met in my life.Highlights:* Learned to truly understand multi-threaded enterprise C++ coding, alongside windows memory dump analysis (Userdump / Windbg), and copious amount of hours lost staring at stack traces (really, it was fun...)* Built an extensive knowledge around Windows, Windows Services, Windows Registry and Active directory that significantly helped with RCA* Became one with networking protocols through intensive packet capture analysis (WireShark, etc)* Continued working on log analysis scripts and automated data collection tools to help with root cause analysis for bad ass problems* Took on the role of Development Liaison and worked with key members of the development and support teams to dramatically improve communication flow between Support and Develoment, improve the decision quality for bug/fix prioritization, and significantly helped reduce bug/fix timeilnes for critical customer issues* Held numerous "Chalk Talks" with all levels of Analysts on the global support team to delve into the deep recesses of the BlackBerry solution, and teach tips and tricks on log file analysis, perl scripting, and crashdump/stack analysis to anyone who would listen -
Technical Support AnalystResearch In Motion Sep 2001 - Nov 2004Waterloo, Ontario, CaGraduated from RCC on a Friday, moved to Waterloo on a Saturday, and started at RIM on the following Monday as employee 2076 (although due to turnover there was about 1800 people at the time). No rest for the wicked!I started in the support org, initially helping folks with handheld issues (sync, provisioning, etc), then helped create the Initial Response Team (IRT) to handle first-level server issues. Shortly after I was a founding member of the Direct Advanced Response Team (DART), a specialized team carved out for Premium paying support customers (mostly Fortune 500 & Gov). Became the first Senior analyst on the DART team, and supported my fellow analysts in delivering world-class customer support by troubleshooting the BlackBerry enterprise framework and providing relevant solutions.Highlights:* Supported some of the larger organizations out there with their BlackBerry needs including the likes of Bank of America, Barclay's Capital, Nextel, Telstra, Pentagon, and many others* Spearheaded the Premium customer service program in the RIM UK office and trained initial support staff during a 5 month stay in London England* Taught myself how to code in Perl and began an extensive project to create a suite of scripts to analyze the multi-gigabyte log files that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server produced on a daily basis. This set of scripts later went on to be turned into a commercial product called the BlackBerry Resource Kit (BRK) and was used by thousands of customers for BES analysis, and a number of partners to feed their BES monitoring solutions
