• Architected, Designed and Implemented an OPRA Tick Plant (feed handler + in-memory DB current value and subscription handler) in pure Java from scratch- Runs current opra loads using 12 cores on a single server, handling hundreds of TCP clients and the full 48 OPRA multicast lines at well over a million msgs/sec Transparent failover for clients between servers Failback a new server from stored data or from a live server Intraday config-based redistribution of OPRA lines across instances  Full transaction logging and market playback Configurable full-server and per-client conflation - This OPRA tick plant has now been in production for 5 years and has never had a major or prolonged outage• Designed an extensive library of reusable primitives for real time pure java computing, including:- script-configurable FAST protocol CODECs, in-memory DB records and mapping- high bandwidth queues- object pools- transaction logging- metrics- conflation- network code (framing, wire protocols, debugging utils, pointer math and sub-arrays)• Used the above foundational technology to completely redesign the preexisting global market data caching and subscription servers, yielding a bandwidth increase of over 10x at decreased network utilization• Complete rewrite of a 10-year-old market data ad-hoc calculation engine - Massive bandwidth increases (over 10x)- Massive supportability enhancements, allowing the retirement of several free-standing maintenance tools- Decreased startup and database reload time from 20 minutes to about 40 seconds• Designed a new RVJMS replacement wire protocol that incorporated - FAST messaging - intelligent blocking and quick-discard logic for unwatched messages- Hybrid TCP/Multicast• Replaced RV entirely with TCP-only protocol about two years later• Transitioned to the Ultra Low Latency team. Went from servicing millisecond-sensitive clients to microsecond-sensitive clients like Algorithmic Trading and Order Routing.

• Created new threading, queuing, event and transaction logging, socket, wire protocol, object pooling, byte manipulation, automated failover, management, persistence and in-core transactional support libraries for improved performance and usability• Used these libraries to rewrite the exchange’s dissemination engines from PL1/Stratus/VOS applications to the Java/Solaris and Java/Linux platforms. This application had a performance target of 10,000 msgs/sec, but today can operate in excess of 110,000 msgs/sec on an inexpensive dual processor Unix machine. • Created a Proof-of-Concept for an alternative implementation of the exchange’s trade engine. This POC performed all major requirements for trading (network protocol, order book, multiple users, dissemination interface, automatic execution and order allocation, persistence) at a rate of over 86,000 quotes per second on an inexpensive dual processor Unix machine (over 20x the performance of the existing trade engine)• Created a Proof-of-concept for an alternative implementation of the exchange’s distributed, highly-available print services (simplified design and improved performance by 40x)• Created a Proof-of-concept for an alternative to JGrinder, the exchange’s database access library and O-R mapping tool (simplified design and improved performance by 16x)• Created a high-performance, multithreaded Harel nested state engine to govern network and machine failover for the exchange’s dissemination engines• Contributed architectural insight and design expertise to make in-house infrastructure smaller, more modular, and easier to use• Contributed architectural insight and design expertise to increase the performance of the exchange’s Java-based trade engine, tick plant, and trade matching system
