Geometry Group Development (C)Key accomplishments: • Improved the accuracy of finite element analyses and the appearance of triangular meshes by implementing a method to produce smooth (G1) surfaces from the meshes. The smooth surfaces, being composed of G1 triangular patches more closely approximated the original surfaces from which the meshes were derived and then were used for more accurate finite element analyses because they introduced a new surface type with the ability to fill gaps between surfaces, thereby reducing the need for expensive sewing or re-importation operations. These gaps frequently arise when models are imported from MCAD systems.

Geometry Team (FORTRAN)Key accomplishments: • Expanded the capabilities and increased the value of the system by creating many new operations such as the construction of a cubic edge tangent to two surfaces, and the projection of an edge tangent to a surface. • Awarded special commendations for the outstanding implementation of new features into the EDG 3D MCAD system.
