About Leena Augimeri, Phd

Leena K. Augimeri, PhD is an innovative scientist-practitioner, and SNAP co-founder. She has dedicated over 40 years to advancing children/youth mental health (CYMH) and crime prevention (CP). SNAP is an internationally recognized evidence-based, gender-sensitive, trauma-informed intervention, supporting children aged 6-11 in making better choices through critical thinking and improving emotion regulation/self-control. Since its inception, SNAP has positively impacted thousands of children/families globally. Under her leadership, SNAP has expanded to include two digitized programs: SNAP for Schools (elementary) and SNAP Youth Justice (youth aged 12-18). Her comprehensive CYMH and CP framework includes community referral protocols, risk/need assessment, and evidence-based programs aimed at children displaying antisocial and/or disruptive behavior. Her post graduate studies focused on the development of the EARL (Early Assessment Risk List); assessment guide for determining future antisocial behaviour/violence in children and the formulation of risk management plans. The EARL is being used worldwide. Leena is known for leading national multi-million $ implementation initiatives, led development activities raising ~$25 million, participated in international research study groups/government review panels aimed at creating massive social change and improving the landscape of CYMH and CP. With numerous publications, media interviews, and hundreds of presentations, her expertise spans - SNAP implementation, self-control, gang prevention, program development and evaluation/research, measurement-based care, and C/Y in conflict with the law, and prevention of violence /youth justice involvement. She was appointed, Chair - Ontario Government's Youth Justice Task Force to formulate impactful recommendations to improve the system. Between 1985-2024, she had a very successful career at CDI and served as Director - SNAP Scientific & Program Development, Program Scaling & Strategic Partnerships, Centre for Children Committing Offences, and Manager - SNAP Clinical & Camp Wimodausis. Dr. Augimeri has received prestigious accolades, including the Prime Minister’s Regional Social Innovation Award for SNAP, Research Canada’s Leadership Advocacy Award, the Elizabeth Manson Award & the King Charles 111 Coronation Medal for her contributions to CYMH & CP. She is committed to early intervention, emotion regulation/self-control, and risk identification/management, with a mission to foster happier, healthier C/Y/families, and to build safer communities.

    Previous to 2004, Earlscourt Child and Family Centre (ECFC) and the Creche Child and Family Centre merged to form the Child Development Institute (CDI). Dr. Leena Augimeri was employed at the formed ECFC. She began her career there in 1985 under Kenneth Goldberg, the ED of ECFC to help create the SNAP (Stop Now And Plan) program (previously called the Under 12 Outreach Project - ORP for short) to fill a service gap when Canada raised the age of criminal responsibility from 7 - 12 years of age. Mr. Goldberg hired a Researcher, Family Worker, and Child Worker to create the SNAP program. Leena - was hired as the Researcher and worked under Dr. Debra Pepler. In 1990 she was appointed Manager of the SNAP Program and in 2000 the Director of the newly established Centre for Children Committing Offences a training, consultation, research, implementation, and development unit that focused on (1) referral protocols, (2) risk/need assessment guides; and (3) the development of evidence-based gender sensitive trauma-informed models for children aged 6-11 in conflict with the law--the SNAP Model.
