In my academic work, I conduct research and teach in the field of occupational health, safety, and wellbeing. I direct the Center for Worker Health and Environment, which is one of ten CDC-funded Centers of Excellence in Total Worker Health, and the Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center, which focuses on training future leaders with the skills to improve the safety, health and wellbeing of workers. I'm privileged to lead an outstanding team of educators, researchers, public health practitioners, and students in the field. I train physicians and graduate students entering occupational and environmental health careers, conduct research, and have a public health practice that engages community groups and companies around the prevention of work-related health and safety problems and in the promotion of worker health and wellbeing.

We founded this Center of Excellence on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in order to improve worksite and environmental health and safety. We accomplish these goals in four ways: by conducting high-quality research; offering graduate and post-graduate education in occupational and environmental health, safety and well-being; providing state-of-the-art continuing education for professionals; and translating research into public health practice by working with communities and companies to apply research knowledge in practice.

As part of my responsibility to improve worker health, safety, wellness and productivity, I direct a center funded by the Centers for Disease Control - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). We train graduate students and occupational medicine doctors in the fields of Occupational Health and Safety and provide continuing education and community partnerships. We also offer research funding for pilot projects that aim to improve occupational safety and health.

This dynamic department focuses on providing quality graduate and public education, public health practice, and research on some of the most pressing public health challenges, including (but not limited to) Climate Change impacts on human health, Total Worker Health, Environmental Justice, Disaster Resilience, and Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Health Links Colorado is an initiative designed to bring wellness to work. We promote the adoption of worksite wellness and safety programs by small businesses in three ways: 1) Healthy Business Certification -- recognizing those small businesses (<500 employees) who have taken steps to create successful worksite wellness and safety programs; 2) "Kick-Start" -- a program that advises enterprises that want to get a worksite wellness and safety program started; and 3) Linking to Local Resources -- those vendors in the local community that can help these small businesses meet their employees' health and safety needs.

I'm founder and former CEO CMO, and former Chairman of the Board of a health information technology company that specializes in merging medical information and algorithms with web-enabled tools that improve the delivery of health care. Our focus is in occupational health and business continuity planning. In October 2019, Axion Health became a Cority Company, bringing Axion Health's strengths in providing Software as a Service for Employee Health especially in the healthcare sector.

I practiced pulmonary and occupational medicine, conducted immunology and epidemiology research, and, from 1997-2005, was head of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the Department of Medicine.
