After nearly 49 years in daily news and eight years on the Palouse, I've retired from the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. We'll be staying here.

We cover the cities and counties surrounding the University of Idaho and Washington State University. Moscow, Idaho, in Latah County and Pullman, Washington, in Whitman County are about 7 miles apart in the glorious wheatland of the Palouse.

* Centralized management of three small production/QA groups to end variances in standards and practices, to increase cross-training and to increase productivity. * Monitored progress of stylebook weekly until it reached completion and then got staff buy-in, resulting in credibility-boosting increase in consistency of editing. * Reduced production/QA FTEs 21%, from 42 to 33, through attrition, but maintained quality and increased number of deadlines met by 35 percentage points to more than 95%* Constantly monitored development of and training for major upgrade to content management system so that startup deadline was met despite significant vendor issues.* Planned reallocation of space to allow first the online staff and then the print design staff to move into more central locations in the operation, increasing efficiency and communications at very little cost* Drove team of four managers in devising a structure that reduced seven levels of management to three, reducing costs and increasing communications.* Led up to 42 staff, including 8 managers, comprising business and science/health/environment reporting teams, nation/world news team, all copy editors, technical editors and archivists. * Led or participated in top-level Page One news decision-making

* Recruited, managed 7 staffers; budgeting; contracts; vendor, corporate and public relations* Grew pageviews from half a million to 30 million monthly by adding content, features, interactivity and generating gross revenue in 2005 estimated at more than $4 million.* Increased coordination and built support by meeting weekly individually and as a group with all reports, with supervisors and with peer managers at P-I and Hearst. * Analyzed and summarized monthly and annual reports on audience growth, revenue and market research for staff, managers and Hearst.* Developed annual budgets of $800,000 to $1 million; came in under budget every year but one. * Negotiated vendor contracts that generated content or added functionality at little or no cost. * Reached out to KOMO’s online staff to obtain news video, which culminated in top-level agreement to share print and online content at multiple levels of the two organizations.* Scheduled weekly meetings with online sales director, made presentations to sales staff and developed relationships with them to increase revenue, resulting in sales ideas coming to P-I first. * Won regional journalism awards annually for overall site, site design and special projects. * Invited to appear on several panels of experts and to give speeches at national online conferences. Presented to community, business and school groups.

* Created seattlepi.com.* Kept P-I information systems staff functioning at a high level for several months when manager suddenly resigned. * Led top managers to create and oversee maintenance of a Seattle Post-Intelligencer business continuity plan.

There was a third term in 2005-2006. This board of students, faculty and professionals met monthly or more often if necessary to select editors, manage the budget and deal with unusual professional and ethical issues at the University of Washington Daily student newspaper.
