I am deeply committed to volunteer work and particularly to the education and development of girls in our community. To that end, Pam Kelley and I created the ground-breaking Madam President Camp, a non-partisan government and leadership camp for middle school girls, hosted for six years by the University of Missouri Kansas City.We designed the Camp for middle school girls, because research shows that at this age, girls begin to think seriously about who they are as individuals and in relation to society. Notably, the research also shows that during these years 7 out of 10 girls begin to struggle with self-esteem issues. So at the point they begin to think about themselves in the world around them, they start to feel bad about themselves. The Madam President Camp aims to boosts girls' confidence and to help them get engaged in their communities. The Camp teaches these girls that they have value and a voice in our society and that our country needs them. One day, when these girls are grown, we want them to have a strong role in making the decisions that affect their lives. During the week-long program, campers have a mini-campaign school, meet local and state politicians, visit civic centers, and are linked with a mentor – a woman leader in the community. She regularly uses 360 evaluations to provide executives with key insights into their impact.
