In this role I have increased responsibilities to deliver on targets set for the Civil Engineering team in line with business needs in the following areas:Asset maintenance management: I have optimized the asset inspection cycle process for operations through improving the inspection process workflow by effective management, setting compliance criteria for multiple engineering consultants and improved stakeholder engagement which led to improved compliance rate at a reduced spend of R19m. I manage the upkeep of digital asset management systems through dedicated teams of engineering consultants. I reduced support costs by 25%. I have shared expert knowledge in the development and sustainability of asset maintenance management systems at industry level at the South African Asset Management Association.Plant operation support: I provide engineering governance and technical solutions to operation teams through in-house activities or management of consultants where I ensure the solutions adhere to civil engineering codes and specifications. This includes short and long-term solutions that will be ensure safe and stable operations of process units.Project Support: I provide civil engineering support on projects that are executed by plant operation teams. I provide technical support in scoping of the work, ensure that the optimal solution is explored, develop technical justifications for renewal applications, approve project plans, risk rankings and classification documents. I am the Engineering Discipline Lead for the management of change process in the Secunda Operations units: Gas Production, Tar, Phenosolven, Nitro, Sulphur and Refining. My responsibility has increased by 300%. I effectively manage myself, young professionals and consultants to provide support to all stakeholders. Which range from foreman to vice president.I am currently a coach/mentor to engineers-in-training. I provide insight initiatives that improve civil engineering development.

Asset maintenance management: continuously improve the manner in which civil structural assets are inspected and managed in the process units, with regards to optimizing inspection guidelines and maintenance strategies for inspections and utilization of digital tools such as Meridium, SAP and GIS software to further improve the management lifecycle of civil assets. Plant operation support: I provide civil engineering governance and technical solutions to plant operation teams. I ensure that optimal and cost effective solutions that adhere to Sasol and SANS civil engineering design codes and specifications are implemented to resolve civil engineering related queries. I manage and provide governance for civil engineering designs provided by engineering consultants.Project Support: I provide civil engineering support on projects that are executed by plant operation teams. Where civil engineering design and construction scope is the dominant portion of the project, I assist in scoping of the work, ensure that the optimal solution is explored, develop technical justifications for capital applications, and approve small project plans, risk rankings and project classification documents.I am the Engineering Discipline Lead (EDL) for the management of change process in which I provide governance should there be changes made to any structure in the Synfuels Gas Circuit and Tar process units. I have developed meaningful working relationships with Sasol Synfuels stakeholders in order to effectively collaborate to achieve business goals that will sustain operations. These stakeholders range from plant foreman to senior management.

During the final four months of my three year graduate program I was seconded to Nako LBE consulting engineers in order to obtain detailed civil engineering design experience. During thissecondment I performed as a design engineer on various projects. My responsibilities were two fold and ranged from technical to commercial tasks. These included designing of steel and concrete structural elements/structures, peer reviewing of project work and engaging with clients and compiling quotations for design and drawing work from the business end. When this secondment came to an end I completed the Sasol Graduate Development Program for Engineers.

Sasol Group Technology, Candidate Civil Engineer – Capital ProjectsDuring the final year of my three year graduate program I rotated to Group Technology. The project execution body within Sasol. During this time I focused on gaining experience and developing my competency with regards to projects and civil construction. The projects that I worked on were in different stages of the project life cycle, which included Basic Engineering, Detail Engineering/Design, Execution and Construction.The primary project I worked on during this period was the multidisciplinary 17th Oxygen Train Project which was in the detailed design phase as well as early construction execution. I acted as the lead civil engineer on the project team with limited supervision from the senior engineer. In this role I provided scope of works, engineering quality plans, execution quality plans, ensured that the scheduled structural design deliverables were being met on time and adhered to Sasol specifications, review of quantities required for construction, provide engineering support for technical queries from the design consultant during the detailed design phase and evaluation of designs during model reviews.I also provided onsite construction supervision, quality control and engineering support to construction teams on multiple construction work fronts ranging from site preparations, storm water drainage installations and construction of a materials testing facility and office area.Being a part of a multidisciplinary project enabled me to develop the necessary skills required to be part of an integrated organization. I developed a detailed understanding of the roles and responsibilities and developed the skills required to be part of the project management and construction execution teams.

Candidate Civil Engineer – Asset Maintenance Management, Plant Operation and Renewal Project SupportDuring my first rotation with the Synfuels Civil Engineering and Governance team my focus was on understanding the Sasol business, civil asset maintenance management principles and implementation of these principles. Providing civil engineering support to plant operation teams through initiatives ranging from continuous project governance and quality control to day-to-day supporting tasks such as providing technical solutions. This involved continuous development, engagement with peers and understanding of civil engineering codes and specifications to ensure sound engineering support was continuously provided to plant operation teams.Being part of the civil engineering governance team afforded me the opportunity to work in all business units within the Sasol Synfuels Complex which enabled me to develop a detailed understanding of the Sasol business and accelerate the skills required to develop sustainable relationships with stakeholders.Asset management/engineering/project support provided during this period included development of maintenance strategies for civil structural assets, executing visual structural inspections within operating units according to the Synfuels civil engineering inspection template, providing quality control on the Coal Processing, Wet Screening Building Rehabilitation Project, engineering support during the annual plant maintenance shutdown cycle and development of project documentation for the Sulphur Granulation House Structural Rehabilitation Project.
