He came to NEDCO as an AmeriCorps*VISTA, a position in which he devoted his time to helping us develop and build our then fledgling farmers’ market program. At the time, NEDCO had a very small staff and ran several programs in 2 counties, requiring him to pick up a project that was relatively new, and had little if any infrastructure besides a concept, an activity and a mission, and accomplish a daunting task with little guidance or supervision. He was able to not only design and produce the market’s policies, procedures, guidelines, operating standards, and business and marketing plans but also took on management of the farmers’ market toward the end of his tenure as a VISTA. His leadership, dedication and ability to learn quickly lifted Springfield Farmers’ Market to a new status. The market is now a major destination in downtown Springfield, Oregon – a place where families come to see a chef demonstration, to learn more about supporting local agriculture, and to enjoy being a part of their community – all thanks to Lee’s hard work. As Lee’s supervisor over the past two years I have been privileged to see him grow from an eager, industrious recent college graduate to a confident, dedicated professional. He continually invests in his own professional development, participates in leadership roles in organizations in which he believes and identifies his aspirations, skills and areas of interest in order to become an expert in those things. I will miss his capacity to do anything I ask him to do – often things he has never done before. He is able to take a task by the horns and figure out what he needs in order to get the job done.
