About Leeya Appleby

I am imaginative, creative, and someone who solves problems thinking outside of the box. I am passionate about social change and personalized care, influenced by my background in international communities and cultures, leadership roles, and community-based learning experiences. I am also a Kroc School Ambassador, a board fellow at SAY San Diego, and a co-host of the podcast "Is the World on Fire". I have interviewing, mediation, community development, and climate justice skills. With over two years of experience in various roles related to social justice, community development, and peacebuilding, I am currently a case management intern at the Southern California Immigration Project (SCIP). This nonprofit organization provides legal and social services to LGBTQ+ African immigrants and asylum seekers in San Diego County. At SCIP, I apply my skills and knowledge in trauma-informed care, client support, collaboration, and research to build client resources, engage in training, and be a reliable point of contact for clients facing challenging situations. I also collaborate with other organizations and participate in meetings and forums to foster partnerships and advocacy. I am also beginning my journey in artivism, working for local art activist Antonia Davis and her storytelling around food migrant workers and other stories from the Borderlands. Art is one of the most influential tools in sharing stories and experiences and opening people's minds. It's been a pleasure to learn with her. My interests include LGBTQ+ issues, art, climate change initiatives, immigration, and urban planning.
