During my decades in the Communications field, I have by choice flowed back and forth between public sector employment and high-profile consulting contracts.I'm pleased to once again doing consulting, and I’m always looking forward to my next Communications challenge.During years of consulting, I’ve successfully led Communications activities for a wide variety of increasingly senior projects, covering many subject areas. These include contracts such as providing Communications counsel and services to the BC Ombudsperson on the release of his very high profile 2017 report on the Ministry of Health firings, and providing similar services to the Hon. Ted Hughes as he carried out a province-wide review of the B.C. child protection system.Other projects included being a senior Communications counsel in a Premier’s office, Communications media coordinator for a mass-murder trial, Communications manager for the Calgary Board of Education, Communications coordinator for the Trans Canada Trail Foundation , and acting Communication Director in various B.C. ministries.I took a six-year break from consulting to take on a full-time government position in the challenging role of Executive Director of Communications and Strategic Relations for the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth, an independent office of the Legislature. (see below for details)I have particular expertise at and enthusiasm for leading and managing Communications projects that are in the public eye, controversial and challenging, bringing much experience in issues management, strategic communications planning, and media relations.

For three years (2017-2020) as an Executive Director of Communications in government, I championed, supported, supervised and in some cases mentored 10 Communication Directors and their 50+ staff.In 2017, I was hired to be the Executive Director of Communications for government’s Social ministries. My portfolio eventually grew to include Advanced Education, Education, Children and Family Development, Social Development and Poverty Reduction, Labour, Citizen Services, Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mental Health and Addictions, and government’s largest ministry – Health.In this role, I was many things to many different people. To senior Communications Directors who reported to me, I was a supervisor, sounding-board, advisor and in some cases mentor.To Communications Managers and their staff, I was an editor, counsellor, go-to person for answers and advice, and HR counsel.For Ministers and their Ministerial Assistants, I was a liaison to work through challenges with their Communications shops when necessary, a ‘bear-pit’ participant to prep Ministers for challenging issues, a touchstone for confirming Communications approaches, and a trusted confidante when needed.For Government Communications and Public Engagement HQ senior executive and the Premier’s office, I was an early-warning-system based on decades of issues management experience, a senior editor, a strategist, an HR guide, and an eye in the sky for morale, temperature, challenges and process for all Communication shops.In 2020 I was asked to take a secondment to the position of Associate Vice President of Communications at Royal Roads University, where I was honored to work until January 2023. At that time, university restructuring eliminated the role of AVP of Communications and I returned to my position in the provincial government. In July 2023 I left the provincial government and happily returned to consulting work, which I enjoy immensely and have done for many years prior to joining government.

I was 'on loan' to RRU from my base position at the provincial government, for a fantastic three-year stint with the university. A few short weeks after I began working with RRU, COVID-19 hit. I had to move from getting up to speed – to leading communications for a university pivoting to new and constantly changing pandemic realities. I quickly realized that operating in that pressurized Communications environment significantly sped up the process of my new colleagues gaining confidence in my leadership style and communications skills. As a result, I was honored to see the trust that senior executive, my staff and other colleagues placed in me early on, during a time that demanded innovation, rapid change and frequent quality communication with internal and external stakeholders.Accomplishments I am proud of during my RRU years include:• supporting an ever-growing, evolving and successful social media function• keeping a focus on both reconciliation and equity, diversity and inclusion throughout communications strategy and execution• President/Campus Conversations becoming a monthly event (instead of four/year), due to pandemic• drafting and finalizing Web Governance Terms of Reference (as chair of the Web Governance Supervisory Committee)• re-structuring the Comms team as per the 2020-2022 Communications Strategy• assisting with five successful Speaker Series eventsAt Royal Roads, I was grateful to become part of a caring, creative and courageous work family. I am the former Executive Director of Communications and Strategic Relations at the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth (RCY), a position I held for six years before returning to consulting. The RCY office is an independent officer of the B.C. Legislature.When B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth’s office was created more than six years ago, I was involved from day one, helping develop policies, strategies and office structure. I assisted in guiding the office to the very successful relationship it has today with the media, and contributed to the strong public and stakeholder support and respect this office enjoys.As the ‘watchdog’ over B.C.’s child protection system, the RCY office took on many controversial and very public issues over the years, and my job was to help the office steer strategically and successfully through those. We released dozens of high-profile reports at large news conferences that attracted intense media coverage.Day-to-day, I oversaw staff and a large budget, provided extensive guidance to contracted resources, handled all media and FOI requests, and briefed ministers and members of the opposition.As well, our office put on an annual Summit, which was led by my communications department. This was a very large conference, and planning involved sourcing out and booking expert and high-profiles speakers, arranging enrolment for hundreds of paying attendees from across Canada, booking venues and promoting through the media.

I have six years of experience as an award-winning print journalist for daily and community newspapers and magazines, covering breaking news, courts, crime, municipal, provincial and federal politics.As well, I wrote daily editorial columns representing a major newspaper’s stance on controversial issues of the day.Positions included:- Vancouver Sun (designated general assignment stringer for Vancouver Island)- Calgary Sun (general assignment hard news reporter)- Calgary Herald (summer intern)- Medicine Hat News (writer of newspaper’s daily editorials) - Goldstream (Victoria) Gazette (associate editor/general reporter).Journalism awards include:- Vancouver Press Club -- Jack Wasserman Memorial Award, for promising new journalists.
